STUDENT SPOTLIGHT - LearnServe Abroad Graduation
This weekend, two of our high school scholars will participate in the LearnServe Abroad graduation event. Both, Zachary Clark ('19) and Carlos Hatton ('21) traveled with LearnServe Jamaica this summer. They have now completed their post-travel requirements and will graduate. Congratulations Mr. Clark & Mr. Hatton! Well done!
What is LearnServe Abroad?
LearnServe Abroad offers students a global look at social innovation, with a focus on design-thinking, service, and leadership. During a two-and-a-half week stay in Jamaica, Paraguay or Zambia, from late June to early July, students (and teachers) will have the opportunity to:
- jointly conduct a design workshop with community youth
- work alongside dynamic local leaders and social entrepreneurs
- immerse themselves in day-to-day life in a developing country
- share home-stays and/or meals with community youth
- support organizations making a difference around health, education, and economic development
Over spring semester, before they travel, the group will meet bi-monthly to learn about the country they'll visit, the organizations they will have the opportunity to work with, and how to support social change abroad. Meetings will be weekly starting mid-May and leading up to departure late June.
After their return, students will convene three more times as they develop action plans and prepare to share their experiences with their own schools and communities. Participants in the LearnServe Abroad program may earn up to 80 community service hours. Service activities vary by program, and differ each year, depending on the needs of the partner organizations, and have included:
in Jamaica: Work on a community project at the Blue Mountain Project, including helping at a health-fair for elementary school children, renovating a health post, giving computer lessons at the elementary school. Work on a school improvement project at Maxfield Children’s Home, including creating a vegetable garden, supporting the early childhood center, and painting a mural.
