MARCH 2018
A message from our PTSA...
There have been several requests from our community for information about where one could make a donation in memory of Karen Kweit, our former treasurer and an ardent supporter of our school and PTA. Karen's family has informed us that, as someone who was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma at the age of 20, it has always been a goal of Karen's to try and help find a cure for this disease. Therefore, per the family's wishes, anyone wishing to make a contribution in memory of Karen may choose to do so by making a donation to the Lymphoma Research Foundation by:
1) Going to www.lymphoma.org and clicking on “Donate” in the upper right hand corner of the webpage. Then, on the left hand side of the webpage, choose “Honor/Memorial Gift."
OR
2) Mailing a completed donation form (below) to: Lymphoma Research Foundation, Wall Street Plaza, 88 Pine Street, Suite 2400, New York, NY 10005.
Quotes for the Month of March:
February 26-March 2: “Working hard is important. But there is something that matters even more: Believing in yourself.” – Harry Potter
March 5-9: "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." - Dr. Seuss
March 12-16: “Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.” –Mother Teresa
March 19-23: "If you focus on results, you will never change. If you focus on change, you will get results." - Jack Dixon
March 26-30: "Don’t walk in front of me… I may not follow…..Don’t walk behind me… I may not lead……Walk beside me… just be my friend” - Albert Camus
Monthly SEL Theme for the Month of March: Friendship (Reaching Out to Others, and Sharing)
Friendship is what binds people together when they take pleasure in each other’s company. Friends listen, laugh, and share the good times, as well as, the bad. “Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly.”
We must help you to realize that true friendship can form bridges that last a lifetime. Strong friendships will embrace you with the necessary strength and love to meet the challenges that confront you throughout your lifetime. Remember, Good friends are hard to find, harder to leave and impossible to forget.
Remember, “An open mind is the beginning of self-discovery and growth.” – (Erwin G. Hall) and that throughout life’s journey your attitude will allow you to form friendships that are a necessary ingredient to successful and meaningful human relationships.
Classroom News!
Team 6A:
Team 6A has been growing and expanding themselves as learners, collaborators and teachers! We completed our first ever JMS Kid EdCamp on the Thursday before the break. The students became collaborative teachers and learners in a variety of topics of their choice like Legos, Cartooning, Manga and Graphic Novels, Chess, Origami, Coding, Optical Illusions, Clash Royale Strategies, to name only a few of the close to 60 sessions your students ran! It was an Epic Day and we are endlessly proud of their achievement!
Team 6B:
Team 6B has been having a tremendous amount of fun discovering concepts related to motion. We used wind-up toys and cars to investigate motion, reference points, and velocity. We participated in jumping, hopping, speed walking, and walking backwards to discover and apply the formula for speed. Finally, we set up a tennis ball bowling alley to explore acceleration. Science investigations make learning meaningful and fun on Team 6B!
Team 6C:
Team 6C was excited to join millions of students and teachers in over 180 countries to complete an Hour of Code activity created by Code.org and their partners HourofCode.com. Doing this activity gave us a taste of computer programming and we learned about all of the tremendous possibilities that there are for a career in the computer sciences field.
Team 6D:
Team 6E:
This month students in Mr. Kuehn's Science class are conducting experiments where they test velocity, acceleration and force! We love playing with matchbox cars!
Team 6F:
Team 6F is excited to learn all about motion in science. We enjoyed doing a lab exploring whether the height of a ramp affects the velocity of a toy car rolling down the ramp. We’ve also been connecting our new science knowledge about speed, velocity, and acceleration to the winter Olympics! Speaking of the Olympics, we’ve been exploring ancient Greece in Social Studies. We discussed how geography affected the lives of ancient Greeks and used our creative talents to visually depict their different forms of government.

Team 7B:
Team 7B celebrated Personal Best Day by having students showcase their talents and teach us about some of their amazing skills. We opened the day with one of our talented students singing the National Anthem. We continued with having our orchestra students perform 2 pieces, learning about managing stress and anxiety, a lesson on the Polish language, instructions on how to draw a perfect circle free-hand, learning about music theory and the tenor sax, tips on becoming a performer, and making cookie dough. What an informative and fun experience for all!
Team 7C:
Team 7C has been enjoying a wonderful few weeks!! Our unit on Shakespeare in English has brought out the actors and actresses in many of the 7C crew as students work in groups depicting scenes from works by the great poet. In addition, we enjoyed a successful personal best day which allowed students to put their passions and hobbies in the spotlight. We had students who displayed their ability to build computers, fold origami in minutes, and complete Rubik's cubes in less than 30 seconds!!! Team 7C is one amazing group of students, that's for sure!!!
Team 8A:
Team 8B:
During February, Team 8B enjoyed the many events that go on during the month as we approached the break. Our students enjoyed the celebration of our various cultures through the performances at Diversity Day. In addition, Cupcake Wars was a huge hit as student leadership looked to raise money for guide dogs. All of these amazing happening while still excelling in their core classes through teamwork.
Team 8C:
Team 8C had a personal best day to be remembered. Students had the opportunity to highlight some of their hidden passions and talents and wow, they did not disappoint. From the beautiful sounds of a talented cellist to bakers to soccer players to a chess master, we had it all on team 8C. Highlight of the day came when Mr. Berry "let" a student win at chess while that student had his back to the chess board. Just a great day overall, team 8C has some incredibly talented and wonderful students!

March is National Nutrition Month
I recently found this great article on The Foundation of Flavor By The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
Exploring Aromatics in cooking:
To create delicious meals add flavor instead of fat, sugar or salt.
1-Carrots: Native to Asia and the Middle East, carrots are tops for beta carotene, which helps regulate the immune system and may reduce risk for certain diseases of aging.
2-Celery: Is a great source of Vitamins A, C and K. Celery also provides quercetin, a flavonoid with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and heart-protecting properties.
3-Chili Peppers: Native to Central and South America, chili peppers range from mild to fiery hot. Heat intensity is courtesy of the chemical compound capsaicin, which may improve digestion. Smaller peppers are generally hotter.
4-Garlic: The most pungent of the alliums. Eating garlic regularly may reduce atherosclerosis and the risk of stomach and colorectal cancers. Garlic’s rich phytochemical content delivers its potential cholesterol-lowering and cancer-fighting characteristics.
5-Ginger: In its native Southeast Asia and India, fresh ginger completes, with garlic and chili peppers, what’s sometimes referred to in culinary circles as a holy trinity of flavor. With a signature spicy fragrance, ginger shines in sweet and savory dishes. It’s rich in antioxidants such as 6-gingerol, believed to be responsible for reducing nausea and symptoms of vertigo. Ginger provides vitamin C, magnesium and potassium.
6-Leeks: Leeks are a natural source of insulin, which supports good gut bacteria, Leeks provide vitamin A and C, folate and manganese.
