Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

It's hard to believe that at the end of this week your children will have finished one month of school! Soon it will be time for the annual Walkathon and Silent Auction. The PTA's from both schools are planning this event together and it is Friday, October 9th from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m. Our school, Mariano Castro, needs as many volunteers as possible on the day of the event. Thank you to Fernanda Brant and William Buitron, our parent leads for the Walkathon! If you have any questions please contact me or one of them.

Best regards,

Theresa Lambert, Principal Mariano Castro

Castro-Mistral Site Planning Committee Meeting

The next Castro-Mistral Site Planning Committee Meeting is Monday, Sept. 14th at 6:00 p.m. in the staff lounge. At this meeting the committee will meet with the architect firm, QKA, to review the latest revisions to the plans. In the spring the Board of Trustees gave new direction to the architects and these are the new plans based on those instructions from the Board.

The CMSPC meetings are open to the public if you would like to hear the presentation or make a comment during the public comment time.

Attendance is Important!

Attendance is a critical factor in any child's school success. Children should attend school every day, except in cases of illness or emergency. It is impossible to replace the learning that happens on any school day with make-up work. Regular attendance and promptness are good habits that are expected and appreciated at all levels of schooling and in the workplace. This year, make school a priority in your household.

Commit to excellence in attendance. Your child's future depends on it!

Kids Read

Kids Read is a program in which high school and middle school students spend time reading with kindergartners, first and second graders. We meet at the Mountain View Library at 585 Franklin St. near downtown Mountain View every Sunday from 3:30pm-4:30pm. We meet in the Community Room.

There is no cost for this program. Your child will get to pick out a free book each week.

Living Classroom Update & Request for Help with Fall Garden Days

The fenced garden at our schools, is located between room #36 (the preschool office) & room #37. This garden is a great resource for our kids’ outdoor learning! Living Classroom lessons are connected to the plants students grow in this garden. The Living Classrooms lessons are now available to all classes from K-4th grade.

To cultivate a garden that best fits the Living classroom curriculum we need a bit of help from our Castro & Mistral green thumb parents!

The Garden preparation tasks for Living Classroom lessons are as follows; we will need help with turning over 5 raised beds and adding soil amendments to beds, to prepare for student planting. There will also be some need of weeding and organizing of the tool sheds.

Garden projects in need of caretakers: This is a great way to volunteer at school at drop off and/or pick up times for 5 to 15 minutes per week. The fenced-in garden is too much for one person to manage, so we will divide and conquer the garden maintenance by asking you to take care of one thing in the garden. What are the things needing care?

  • Take care of two barrels of succulent plants. (for the year)
  • Establishing two barrels of blueberry bushes.
  • Keep bird bath filled with water. (for the year)
  • Care for the herb raised planter bed. (for the year)
  • Take care of two rose bushes. (for the year)
  • Take care of feeding the worms in the worm box. (for the year)
  • Help turn over 5 raised garden beds. (one time request)

If you are interested in any of these garden “care taking” jobs, please come to the fenced garden on either of the dates listed below. (These care taking jobs can be done along with your child.)

Fall Garden Preparation Dates are:
Tuesday, September 15th, 10 am - noon and/or Saturday, October 10th, 10am - noon.

See you soon! Your PTA Garden supporters,
Shelly Kosak (Mistral) & Lynn Owano (Castro)

Interpreters Needed for Parent Teacher Conferences

For the past couple of years, our district has provided a service to improve communication between our teachers and our parents who are learning English. We were able to provide interpreters for 463 parent-teacher conferences last fall. We need the help of our parents and community members to identify interpreters in the following languages: Mandarin, Russian, Vietnamese, and Spanish.

If you are a fluent speaker of English and one of these 4 languages, please help our teachers and families by becoming an interpreter. If you know of someone who is qualified, please pass this information to him/her. Our main need for Interpreters will be during Parent Teacher Conferences from October 5 through October 16th from 12:30 – 4:00pm (times will vary between schools). We can guarantee a minimum of 3 hours per day during the conference weeks only (Oct. 5-16th). All interested candidates please apply through Ed-Join @ www.edjoin.org. Interviews and testing to take place ASAP. Successful candidates will be processed in September and are expected to be available for work in October. We would also like to add interested Interpreters to our District-Wide Interpreter list on an as-needed basis possibly for IEP’s and other school site needs.

Interpreters receive $20 per hour for their service.
