John Newbery Medal Winner 2016; Randolph Caldecott Honor Medal 2016
Last Stop on Market Street, written by Matt de la Pena and illustrated by Christian Robinson, is this year's winner of the John Newbery Medal and a Caldecott honor. The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. Every Sunday after church, CJ and his Nana ride across town on the bus. But today, CJ wonders why they don't own a car like his friend Colby's family. Why doesn’t he have an iPod like the guys on the bus? How come they always have to get off in the section of town that's dirty? Each question is met with an encouraging answer from Nana, who helps him see the beauty in their routine and the world around them. This title can be found in the LS Library using the call number E DEP. Listen to author de la Pena and illustrator Robinson in the video linked below.
