A Message from Dr. Kevin Jauch

If there is a silver lining to the COVID cloud that has hung over us this past year, it's that it forced educational professionals to collaborate with peers to a greater extent than ever before. These new relationships have supported us, inspired us, and helped us broaden our perspectives. The resulting professional and personal growth that has arisen from the problem-solving, creativity and ingenuity during this historic period is tremendous.

One of the things I truly love about my job is the ability to collaborate with some of the best educational minds in the entire state of Illinois! When this is all behind us, and yes, I do believe it will be at some point, I hope that we build on these relationships, continuing together to discover ways to improve our services to our students, educators and the community.

New STS Training Dates: June 9, August 12

Response to our past Short-Term Substitute Teacher training is very favorable. In fact, 100% of participants at the April 7 class strongly agreed that the presenter was knowledgeable, materials and presentation techniques were well-organized and engaging, and said they are highly likely to recommend North Cook ISC to colleagues. Here are comments from a few of the 16 participants:

"I did not know much about the role and expectations of a Short-Term Substitute. This training really helped my overall understanding of the expectations."

"The whole presentation was such a good refresher for me, as I have been a para for three years."

NCYAA Hosts Open House, Introduces ALOP

North Cook Young Adult Academy (NCYAA) Regional Safe School hosted Open House events in late March and early April. Visitors met NCYAA staff, toured the facility, and asked program specific questions. Many remarked about the beautiful school setting and the improved therapeutic environment available to students. Altogether, 17 guests attended and eight others are scheduled for future dates.

Guests also learned about NCISC’s Alternative Learning Opportunity Program (ALOP). This program offers small class sizes in a structured environment with robust social emotional and behavioral support. Students who are struggling with a traditional education setting, academics, or attendance may find this to be a good option. Flexible educational services, including in-person instruction and credit recovery tailored to individual needs are provided. There are approximately 20 spaces available right now for the ALOP. Please call the school office at 847-803-3705 for more information or to schedule a visit.

Licensure News

License Renewal

The 2021 license renewal season is in full swing and moving along with very few issues. ISBE is sending out renewal reminders in waves this year which may be helping with the overload on ELIS. The most common problems involve PD/Employment Status in ELIS or having entered an insufficient number of PD hours in order to renew their licenses. All licenses that require Professional Development must be renewed by August 31, 2021.

Licensure Bills

There were quite a few educator licensure bills introduced this spring in the Illinois General Assembly. We will closely monitor a number of them, in particular, those impacting elementary grade ranges, early childhood educator prep programs, social workers, career and technical educator requirements, new short-term teaching licenses for special education, elimination of the edTPA requirement, and reinstatement of lapsed licenses.

Contact Shirley Bloom sbloom@ncisc.org or Izabela Kuczek ikuczek@ncisc.org for assistance with anything licensure related.

Can you spell C-O-N-N-I-V-E-R-Y?

The 11th Regional ISC Scripps Spelling Bee Championship was held in person at McClure Junior High on March 16 with nine finalists adhering to COVID guidelines and restrictions. Kudos to Elaine Xu - Highcrest Middle School, Wilmette District 39 and Isaac Margolis - Wood Oaks Jr High, Northbrook District 27 who competed on behalf of the North Cook area.

Congratulations to Regional Champion Destiny Johnson, 8th grader from Huth Middle School, Matteson District 162. The winning word after nine rounds was "CONNIVERY." Destiny will represent our region at the national competition starting June 12. The Spelling Bee finals will be hosted at the ESPN Wide World of Sports at Disneyworld in Florida.
