recent happenings in 4th grade - January 25-29

Day of Service

Our class will go to Truman Medical Center to participate in inter-generational activities on February 26th. Permission slips need to be returned ASAP! Other grade levels are needing donations if you are willing and able to donate. The following donations are requested: gently used or new shoes, 1 yard of fleece, fabric scissors, hand towels, full sized shampoo bottles and canned food items.

We will be needing 2-3 parent chaperones to accompany us on our upcoming service day field trip. If you are interested in attending, you will be responsible for 6-7 students during our trip. There should be room on the bus for chaperones, however, it is possible that chaperones might need to meet our group at our destination.

If you are interested in attending, please email me or send a note to school by Wednesday, February 3. If more than three parents respond, we will put all names in a hat and draw three names. You will be notified either way, by Friday, February 5, in order to plan accordingly.

This week in ELA we continued making inferences and writing informational pieces. Also, we began an ongoing reading activity called PALS. Students will be with a partner or two taking turns reading aloud back and forth to each other. The listener is responsible for "coaching" the reader, especially with unknown or incorrect words.

Fractions continue... please check in with your student about what he is learning about fractions. We have learned about equivalent fractions, comparing fractions and we will begin adding fractions with common denominators.

Our class has also been working hard on a TenMarks goal. We set a goal to complete 100 TenMark assignments with an 80% or better on the first try. We have met our goal!!! To celebrate, students can bring an individual snack and/or drink to enjoy on Wednesday. Each student is responsible for their own snack and drink. NO ONE WILL BE SHARING OR TRADING THEIR SNACKS OR DRINKS! We will be celebrating around 10 that morning if that influences your decision on what kind of snack or drink to send with your student. Be sure to congratulate your student on working so hard!

Be sure to continue working on multiplication facts! We have made a lot of progress since the beginning of the year and are just over halfway to our 4th grade goal of 80 facts in 4 minutes. There was a dip in our average scores after winter break, so please keep practicing!
