Meet a 13-year-old Published Illustrator
It’s not every day a 13-year-old girl becomes a published illustrator, especially for a book collaboration with her mother, grandmother, and great-grandaunt.
Emily Hartsaw, one of our seventh-grade students, has done just that. The book is especially important to the artist because it contains stories about her great-great-grandparents.
· Four generations of women collaborated on this family book project featuring tales of the American experience.
· The book includes typewritten memories that have been sitting on a shelf for nearly three decades.
· Miss Hartsaw lovingly illustrated the original manuscript written by her great-grandaunt, 85-year-old Mable Elizabeth Gates.
· The illustrator’s mother—author, Lela Rast Hartsaw—co-wrote, designed, and self-published the title with the help of her mother, Brenda Dowdy Bell.
Remembering Lela & Charlie: A Four-Generation Book Project takes readers on a journey back to simpler times in 20th century rural Mississippi before microwave ovens and the internet, when country doctors made house calls, and a plate of home-baked biscuits awaited any hungry visitor. Mrs. Gates’ evocative narrative from the life and times of her parents, Lela and Charlie Myrick, reveals both difficult periods and times of great joy and reminds us of what’s most important—family and community.

Teen Biz Reading Program
Just a friendly reminder, your child should be completing a minimum of 2 Teen Biz Articles per week at home in addition to the articles they complete at school. A score of 75% or above will ensure their lexiles will increase. Our school wide goal is for each student enrolled in the Teen Biz Program to complete 40 + articles before the end of first semester.
Thank you for your continued support as we prepare for the FSA exam this Spring.

Attention Seniors - Golden Herald Awards
The Golden Herald Awards program originated in 1978 to honor outstanding Manatee County high school seniors for noble service to their schools and community. All high school seniors with a 3.0 or higher GPA and service to their school/community are eligible for nomination.
The essential qualification for a Golden Herald nominee is SERVICE. The Golden Herald Award in each category is given to the individual whose record of achievement and service to school and community best exemplifies the unselfish use of talents and abilities to help others. Your Community Service does not have to specifically relate to your category although some participation in your category is recommended.
The winners will receive a Golden Herald Award medallion, a cash award and a trophy. The honorable mention award recipients will receive a cash award and a trophy. All nominees will receive a certificate of merit.
Applications to be nominated for a Golden Herald Award are available in High School Guidance. See Ms. Quick for more Information or email her at tquick@msaschool.org.
Deadline to turn in the application is Wednesday, December 20, 2017. No late applications will be accepted.
