Welcome to the Seekonk High School Newsletter! It is designed to keep everyone (parents, students, staff, and community members) informed of the many events that are happening around the school. It contains links, pictures, and videos so that you have a more interactive experience and the ability to learn more (if you wish) about various topics.
As always, we welcome feedback! Let us know what you think by contacting us and sharing our news!
Local Professionals Needed to Help Guide Students' Career Exploration!
Can you help a student make more informed choices about their career and college plans? Consider volunteering to be a job shadow host and/or the subject of an informational interview. We will put your name on a list of possible contacts for students interested in doing in depth career exploration.
FYI: Job shadow hosts allow a student to visit you at your place of business to get a first-hand look at the job and have time to ask questions and get expert advice. Informational Interviewees would come to Seekonk High School to meet with a student or small group of students who are interested in knowing more about your line of work. There is no minimum time commitment in either role--this is done at your convenience.
Anyone wishing to be on the list must consent to a CORI (background) check, which can be processed at the Main Office.
Feel free to spread the word to your friends, neighbors, and SHS alumni.

Hannah Hendricks and Alexia Desrochers attend youth leadership conference!
They are now tasked with creating campaigns designed to improve their own local community. We are all sure you will be hearing more about these two young women before the year is over.
in their own words...
The only way to explain the impact of this experience is to not edit the students' words, but instead, include them in their entirety. Take the time to read them. You will not be disappointed!
"The Leadership Conference was amazing, we learned not only the importance of helping others, but how to connect with people from different environments. People who have struggled against profiling, whether it be based on their ethnicity, race, social class, or origin. Going and meeting these people made me realize that there is so much more than Seekonk, and we shouldn't stick to just doing service for our community. We have to step out of comfort zone and help people that are in dire need. The harvesting of vegetables we did was manual labor, but it helped low income families in receiving nutritional sustenance. Something that majority of us take for granted in our own homes. People are struggling throughout the country and the world. The Conference taught me that I have to stand up and help or no one's lives will get better. Just by going out and helping 10 people, and they go out and do the same, we can slowly change the world for the better. And that's what leadership is all about, leading people in the right direction so that their decisions will leave a positive impact on this world." - Alexia
"I went into the conference not knowing what was ahead of me and came out wishing it wouldn't end. I know for some people this may not seem like a big deal, but for me this was such an inspiring weekend. Being at the farm, I developed a better understanding for where our food really comes from and how easy it is to make a difference in our community. On the other hand, from interacting with the other leaders and the professor from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, I have a different perspective of who I am. The speaker stressed the importance of identity and that it should only matter how we perceive ourselves. My new goal is to apply what I was taught from the conference into helping others build up their self esteem and become more involved in the world around them. I truly wish that everyone in my community could experience what I did this past weekend." - Hannah
Dr. Jones
You are supposed to struggle!
I had the privilege of speaking to the students before the representative from Massachusetts Insight for Education (MIE) representative hit them with some fact and figures. The main message I delivered to the students was one in which I strongly believe. Greatness doesn’t come in one fell swoop, but in the accumulation of pushing through many small struggles.
The year is beginning to settle in and students often start to feel some pressure. It is tempting (and natural) for them to consider moving down a level to make life easier. Please remind students that while we want them to struggle, our teachers are here to support them as well. Make sure your student is taking advantage of extra help sessions the teachers offer. This is a time in their lives that they need to advocate for themselves and make the decision to commit to working hard for success. Please help teach them this by making sure they exhaust every avenue of support before moving away from the challenge.
If you want to know more of my thoughts on this I also wrote a short blog post about the topic of productive struggle.

Assistant Principal - Mr. Aguiar
Positive Behavior Committee
Each month our committee selects a theme that represents the behaviors that we encourage at SHS. This month the theme is Starting Strong. Our staff recently recognized students that have started strong in a variety of ways with Positive Behavior Recognition Cards. Parents will be receiving phone calls from Mr. Aguiar throughout the year as students are recognized. The cards will be displayed on Character Way in SHS during the school year.
warrior cries
Warrior cries are shout outs to staff and students here at Seekonk High School. They are our way of recognizing hard work, creative thinking, and characteristics that make us proud to be part of this community. Please contact Dr. Jones if you wish to give a "warrior cry" to someone!
Miss Kozlowski, Miss Wilson, Mrs. Horton, and the members of S.P.E.A.K. and the Executive Board...for "organizing our Hurricane Relief Drive. These are hard to accomplish because of the limited time frame. These individuals and organizations did a fantastic job of working together and with the community to help those in need."
Transitions - Mrs. Fitzgerald

What’s going in the History department?
In honor of 9/11, Mrs. Salisbury’s USII History Honors participated in an activity that compared and contrasted an iconic photo and image from 9/11 to other contemporary and historical events such as:
• “Raising Flag on Iwo Jima” by Joe Rosenthal
• “Kent State University Massacre” John Filo
• “V-J Day in Times Square” Alfred Eisenstaedt
• “Tiananmen Square” Stuart Franklin Magnum
Students were asked: What do the photos/iconic events have in common? How are the photos/iconic events different? Why are they all iconic?
Mr. Censabella’s US History I students this week looked at an import book from the port of Salem in 1804 to make note of the goods commonly imported into the country and to chart the country of origin. Students used this data to design color-coded maps to delineate trade patterns and make observations about global trade during this time period. Also, Mr. Censabella’s civics students did a couple of fun and interesting activities to learn about human behavior and the need for government.
