1984 Quote Reflection
By Jazmin Umana
"Never again will you be capable of love, or friendship,or joy of living, or laughter, or curiosity, or courage, or integrity. You will be hallow. We shall squeeze you empty, and then we shall fill you with ourselves. (256). ~ Book 3, Ch. 2
Despoilment - To strip of possessions; things of value.
This is a spine-chilling quote because it peculiarly reminds me of rape. The party is forcibly violating Winston in this part of the book. A rape victim is often left with the feeling that that a part of them has been torn apart, because the feeling is still with them, the victim may have a sense that the crime is continuously occurring. Everything the party is taking away from Winston are his human emotions/feelings. They are remaking him into something lesser than a human being. To use another person's body and ignore the soul the resides within is the most horrendous monstrous crime that one person can commit against another. The party repeatedly tortures Winston to he point where he purposely loses himself so the beatings will stop and please his abductors. In the end Winston loses his love, he gives it up so the ultimate torment wouldn't have to be beared.
