New Jersey Expands Earned Sick Leave and State Benefits
New Jersey Governor, Phil Murphy, has expanded Earned Sick Leave (ESL), the Family Leave Act (FLA), Temporary Disability Insurance (TDI), and Family Leave Insurance (FLI) to accommodate those suffering directly or indirectly from COVID-19. Coronavirus Relief Bill to Increase Unemployment Benefits
The coronavirus relief bill under consideration by Congress would significantly expand unemployment benefits for Americans who lose their job due to coronavirus. The bill would offer Americans $600 a week and pay 13 weeks of unemployment benefits. This legislation would also extend benefits to a broader pool of people, including gig workers, like for Uber or Lyft.
Coronavirus Impacts on US Healthcare System
On a typical day, only one third of hospital beds in America are available. With the spread of COVID-19, this number has dwindled rapidly, and new emergency hospital centers popping up regularly. Access to care is being called into question, and experts say this will have the greatest impact on the poorest in America. With health insurance coming predominantly through employment arrangements, affordable access to care is a growing concern for many American during a time where lay-offs and closures are common.
