Mariner Memo
Week of October 7 - 12
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
It is our first Homecoming in the new building. Our student leadership has worked hard to come up with new traditions that promote inclusivity and sustainability. In working with our students, it was clear that hall decorating was not something that we wanted to continue in the new space. We want to preserve the look of the building and also reduce our paper use. Our student leadership team proposed the idea of doing floats instead. Each class is given a wood platform truck to decorate. The class royalty will be riding on these floats during half-time of the football game on Friday. Students are using recycled and repurposed goods for their floats. We are looking forward to seeing what they can create!
As a staff, we continue to work on providing high instruction to all students in every classroom every day. Teachers are meeting with their supervisor to determine an area of focus for their instruction this school year and also writing their student growth goals. Our administration team has greatly enjoyed getting into classrooms and talking to students about what they are learning. It is incredible to watch what our students are learning and creating with the facilitation of our teachers.

BEYOND THE BIRDS AND THE BEES-- OCT 9
Bellingham Public Schools will host Beyond the Birds and the Bees: Talking to Children about their Bodies, Sex and Relationships from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9 in the District Office Board Room, located at 1306 Dupont Street.
This event is geared for families with children in grades 5 to 12. School staff and health professional guests will share with parents and guardians what schools teach about puberty and human sexuality and will discuss how to talk to teens about bodily changes, responsibility and respect. The HIV/AIDS (human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome) curriculum will also be previewed on this same evening.
Families are the first and best teachers for children. Talking to children about building healthy relationships, healthy communication, and the role sex plays in healthy relationships is important for lifelong well-being. This evening will support families in having important conversations with their children about sex and relationships.

POVERTY SIMULATION
Poverty is a reality for many students and families in our school district. But unless you've experienced poverty, it's difficult to truly understand.
Are you interested in gaining a better understanding of what it might feel like to live in poverty? Please join us for a “Poverty Simulation” on Thursday, November 7th, 6-8 pm at Sehome High School.
It’s an incredibly impactful event that gives us a better understanding of the challenges people face when working and struggling to pay bills. Each attendee is assigned the role of a family member and they must navigate various challenges throughout the workshop. This eye-opening event raises awareness about poverty-related issues in a way that inspires compassion and community action!
The Bellingham Schools Foundation is happily covering all costs to partner with Whatcom Dream to make this a FREE event for all. Click here to reserve your spot

PTSA Volunteer Meet & Greet
The Sehome PTSA is considering different options for the spring fundraising event. We have had a long history of hosting successful auctions, but this year we are lacking an auction committee. PTSA would like to brainstorm with past and future volunteers to get some ideas on how to proceed. Are you interested in continuing the auction tradition? Do you have another idea for an event that will help us raise the funds to support our school? Would you like to meet up with other SHS families? We would love for you to join us Tuesday, October 22nd, at 7:00 pm at the Whole Foods food court. No pressure, we promise!
If you have any questions, please contact us at sehomehighschoolptsa@gmail.com.
Hope to see you there!
