Please read below for some exciting opportunities from the American Legion for our Lakeland Students!
PA American Legion 2021 Essay Contest Grades 6-8
Any student enrolled in grades 6-8 is eligible to participate in this essay contest. This year's prompt is "How can bullying be prevented?"
7th and 8th grade students at Lakeland who are interested in participating should submit their essay to their English teacher no later than January 15th, 2021. Essays will then be reviewed, and winners will be submitted to the American Legion Post for judging.

2021 PA American Legion 86th Annual Essay Contest Grades 9-12
Any student in grades 9-12 are eligible to participate in this essay contest. This year's prompt is "What does the 26th Amendment mean to me?"
Those interested in participating should submit their essays to the local American Legion Post no later than January 9th, 2021.
Prizes for winners are as follows:
1st Place: $3,500, a plaque, and a trip to the PA American Legion Convention in July
2nd Place: $3,000 and a plaque
3rd Place: $2,500 and a plaque

2021 High School Oratorical Scholarship Program
The American Legion is proud to announce its Oratorical Scholarship Program for the 2020-2021 school year.
This scholarship contest exists in two parts:
Part 1: 8-10 minute memorized oration on some phase of the United States Constitution
Part 2: 3-5 minute oration on of of four "assigned topics" selected by the National American Legion Organization. Those topics can be found at www.legion.org/oratotical/topics
Scholarship Prizes are as follows:
1st Prize: $7,500 scholarship, plaque, and a trip to the Department of Pennsylvania State Convention to deliver his or her winning prepared oration, plus the opportunity to represent PA at the National Contest and receive an additional $2,000.
2nd Prize: $5,000 scholarship and plaque.
3rd Prize: $4,000 scholarship and plaque.
Students must submit an application to the local American Legion Post by December 6th, 2020.
