A note about conferences and report cards

Parents and Guardians -

As we head into Parent/Teacher Conferences this week, here are a few documents/changes in procedures for you to review:

Report Cards:

Over the last two years, our district has been slowly transitioning to an all electronic platform for newsletters, parent communications, and other district documents and forms. This year, your child’s report card (as well as historical report cards from last year) will be available to be viewed through the Powerschool Parent Portal. Your child’s completed report card will be available to view the day before your scheduled conference. Here is a video of how to access and view the report card on the Parent Portal. In the event that you would like a paper copy of your child’s report card and do not have access to a printer, please email our main office staff. In the email, please be sure to indicate your child’s first and last name, grade and teacher. Reports will be run and a copy will be sent home with your child the day before your child’s conference for you to view ahead of time.

NWEA Overview:

Prior to your child’s scheduled conference, you will receive a hard copy of your child’s latest NWEA/MAP scores. This national standardized assessment, given three times a year to all students, measures student achievement in reading and math (for Kindergarten we only give the reading assessment in the Fall and Winter). The report you will receive shows your child’s scores each time they have taken this assessment in our district. Linked here is a parent guide for interpreting your child’s scores: NWEA Parent Guide.

Update on New Math Curriculum:

Please see the attached/linked letter from our Curriculum Coordinator that was sent out in the fall in regards to our new Math Curriculum and the potential impact on reporting progress of our students on the report card this year. Math Curriculum Letter

Thank you for your partnership in your child/ren’s education. When the school, family and student/s all work together, we get the best results for our kids!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

IN DISTRICT TRANSFER INFORMATION

During the 2020-2021 academic year, the district began transitioning to a building placement system based on geographic boundaries for each elementary school. Each home address in the district was assigned an attendance zone with a designated elementary building serving those residences. We are now entering year two of this transition. Please read the below information as there are important changes taking effect in August 2021.

IMPORTANT: Beginning August 2021 (Year 2)

  • Transportation boundaries will be implemented. Transportation will only be provided to and from your zoned school.

  • Current elementary students will not be forced to move to a different building. They will be “grandfathered” in at their current school. However, if the building is located outside the family’s attendance zone, parents will be responsible for transportation to and from school. Parents must apply for an In-District Transfer if they want to transfer their student.

  • The Internal District Transfer process will open for requests on February 1, 2021, and close on March 15, 2021. Requests will be submitted by parents through their PowerSchool account. Parents/Guardians will be notified via email by April 1 of the status of their request. Approved transfers will take effect in August 2021. Instructions on filling out a transfer request form, information on elementary school attendance zones as well as a FAQ document can be found at In-District Transfer Information.

  • Placement will occur on a first-come-first-served basis, dependent on seat availability, and priority order listed below.

    • Priority 1: Siblings who are attending separate buildings and wish to be reunited.

    • Priority 2: Families who are attending a building outside of their home boundary and are seeking a transfer into their home boundary zone

    • Priority 3: Families seeking an internal transfer for any other reason.

Please contact your school office or our administration office with questions.

Some helpful reminders...

  • Please send any changes in transportation with your child in the morning, if possible. This gives the teachers an opportunity to remind your child, if appropriate.
  • Remind your child of any changes.
  • Keep your pick up number displayed in your car until your child comes to your vehicle. This assists our helpers in getting your child to your car as quickly and safely as possible.
  • Continue to pull all the way forward. This helps tremendously in getting all the cars through the line quickly and safely.

SCRIP

The Scrip program provides another great way to earn extra cash for our school AND extra cash for your family! You simply purchase the Scrip gift cards at face value and use them toward purchases at stores where you normally shop. The retailers donate a portion of that money back to our school. 50% of the profit goes to the PTO and the other 50% is given to you quarterly by check or you can donate back to the school. Scrip can be ordered online at www.shopwithscrip.com; gift cards can be printed from your home printer and you can reload gift cards instantly, also. The Emmons Lake enrollment code is: FF864CE71895.

If you have any questions, please contact Andrea McKenna at andreamckenna6@gmail.com.

Happy Shopping!

DIRECT YOUR DOLLARS - SpartanNash Receipts

Emmons Lake has the opportunity to earn $1000 from SpartanNash, simply by shopping at any local company-owned store, including Family Fare Supermarkets, D&W Fresh Markets and Hardings Grocery and sending the receipt to school! This is VERY helpful, especially this year because we are unable to have any fundraisers thus far and we didn't have any at the end of last year!! Through the “Direct Your Dollars” program, we can turn eligible receipts into cash for our school! Just send your receipts to school with your child to give to his/her teacher. For every $150,000 in receipts we collect, we will earn a $1,000 donation from SpartanNash. We do need original receipts, so no photocopies. Start sending in those receipts!! We’ll collect them throughout the year. With your support – and your receipts – we’ll be raising money for our school. It’s easy to do!!!!

Message from the Principal...

Wow! March is here! If you would have asked me in August to predict how this year would go, there is no way I could have imagined it would be so incredible. Each week, students, staff, and families continue to rise to the expectations and adjustments to what 2020/2021 brings.

Last week, we were able to have a little bit of fun with the Polar Plunge. Thanks to all who contributed and sent words of encouragement. We also wrapped up our Read and SOAR reading program with a special thanks to our PTO. This will launch us into March is Reading month as we continue to celebrate the gifts of reading.

We all know how weather in Michigan can change, particularly in the spring. Please continue to send in winter weather gear to school. Puddles and mud often fill the playground, so boots and snowpants are definitely helpful!

As always, if you have any questions, please don't hesistate to reach out.

Grateful to Serve With You,

Mrs. Schultz
