SUMMER READING CELEBRATION
This week we celebrated our summer readers! These were readers who read and logged at least 2000 minutes into HEB Reads over the summer. Our top reader was Rachel Miller for the second year in a row with 12,000 minutes. The students enjoyed donuts, drinks, and door prizes because #broncosREAD. Our donuts were donated by our adopter, Holey Boba & Donuts!
STUDENTS WRITE LETTERS TO VETERANS
Honor Flight DFW takes World War II veterans to Washington D.C. so they may visit the memorials built in their honor. On the way home, Honor Flight has mail call, in which the veterans names are called. Each veteran receives an envelope with cards and letters from family, friends and complete strangers. Mrs. Burgess’s U.S. History class participated in mail call for a group of DFW veterans who left on their Honor Flight this week. When they return home, every veteran will have a letter from a student at BJH thanking them for their service and reminding them why we still honor them. We received a thank you from Ken and Celia Douglas, who will have a family member on this week’s Honor Flight thanking our students for their letters.

ATTENTION 7TH GRADE PARENTS
We will begin screening all 7th grade students the week of September 10th. All 7th graders will have the following screenings: vision, hearing, height/weight, blood pressure and acanthosis nigricans. In addition, all girls will have spinal screenings.
The purpose of spinal screening is to detect the signs of abnormal curves of the spine at their earliest stages so that the need for treatment can be determined. Due to changes in Texas screening laws, now all girls in 5th and 7th grades and boys in 8th grade are required to be screened. Exceptions to this are exemption for religious reasons or the student being under the care of a physician for scoliosis. Submission of a written affidavit of exemption or the results of a professional examination must be submitted to the school nurse for your student to be exempt from screening.
Screenings will be performed during non-core classes whenever possible. Also, note that it is beneficial for girls to have a tank top or sports bra available during screening.
NEW CLUB ON CAMPUS!
JUNIOR WORLD AFFAIRS COUNCIL
We are starting a Junior World Affairs Council here at BJH, which will replace the GEO club. Global Young Leaders is an education program of the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth that creates an intelligent pathway for North Texas high school students to achieve ambitions in international careers. This program gives students opportunities to hear speakers, serve their community, and become informed citizens! This year JWAC's focus is on poverty. Students will be challenged to find ways to combat poverty in their communities and beyond.
The club will meet Thursdays before or after school (two meetings offered to accommodate busy schedules) and officer elections will start next week. Come join us in G107.
