Midway Mustang Memo
October 2020
Dear Families,
Dear Parents,
We express our deep gratitude for all of your support and encouragement during our first quarter of school. Because of your dedication to the health and well-being of our children, your influence has been successful in mask-wearing here at Midway. Every student enters the building with their mask on (if they forget theirs, we have a disposable one for them to wear). Most students, about 98%, wear their masks during the day except for at lunch, recess, and snack time. Research shows that by wearing a mask, transfer of germs can be considerably decreased. We are extremely proud that our students show how much they care for one another by continuing to be diligent about wearing a mask. Masks are still an expectation for all students and staff--let’s continue to care for one another as we begin quarter two as we mask up, wash up, cover up, back up, and clean up.
Hugs,
Jan Munroe, Daphne Rogers, and Jennifer Brown 😊

Technology Information
Here at Midway teachers are educating themselves and students on digital citizenship. We want students to use technology but in a safe responsible manner.
Our Digital Citizenship Plan: Every student at Midway ES will become a responsible digital citizen who knows how to harness the learning potential of digital media in a 24/7 connected world, safely, effectively, ethically, and respectfully. Students at this school will be educated about appropriate online behavior, including interacting with other individuals on social networking websites and in chat rooms and cyber bullying awareness and response. In order to accomplish this goal, each year students will be provided with direct instruction on how to be a responsible digital citizen.
You can do your part at home by talking to your kids about what sites are appropriate for their age and your family's preferences. The 3Is of Internet safety are a quick snapshot of what parents need to support and protect their children. They are applicable to students of every age and grade level:
- Informed: Parents need a balanced perspective of technology use, and it’s important to present the positives and negatives. Technology is critical to learning and to the future of our students.
- Interested: Become interested in your child’s learning and technology use. Look at their work, and have the child explain what they are doing, why they are doing it, and why it’s significant. Always have your child's user name and passwords for any websites/games.
- In View: Keep devices out of bedrooms and in public spaces. Keeping all devices in view, while sometimes difficult, will help keep young people safe.

News from Nurse Berry
If you were giving a provisional 3300 when you registered for school, you must turn in a completed 3300 form by 11/09. There is another free event the county is providing to have this form completed on 11/06 from 9-12pm at Otwell Middle School.
Covid 19 and the Flu have very similar symptoms. Please keep your child home if they are exhibiting any "flu" like symptoms. With this being said it, is more important this year to protect your child from the flu and it is never too late to receive the seasonal flu shot. As always, If your student has vomited, had diarrhea, or has had a temperature greater than 100.4 F they must stay home for at least 24 hours before returning to school. Allow enough time for persistent coughs to improve as well. Please report any contagious illness to the nurse (Covid 19, Flu, Strep Throat, Pink Eye etc. ) Rest assured that all information is kept confidential. If multiple cases are reported within a short time period within the same class, parents are notified of the situation without any personal information released. Please visit nurse page on the school website for useful information on when to keep your child home or you can always reach out to me with any questions.
Please make sure your child's mask fits probably. If they are too big they tend to not stay covering the face probably.
Please remember that all parents/guardians must bring medication to the clinic. This includes over the counter medication like cough drops etc. The clinic is more than happy to keep medication that will alleviate symptoms for a student so they can remain in class comfortably and avoid phone calls home.
From the Midway Café
November, crispy leaves and autumn breezes. That’s what we’re looking forward too! Hope this finds you all well. We’re moving along here in the Mustang Café & very happy to see so many of your kiddos as they come through the lines each day!
Most of you know about the purchasing of ice cream as a class treat for birthdays, since no outside food can be brought in at this time. I wanted to let you know about another option that we’re offering. On our menu each Monday, we serve a whole grain chocolate chip cookie that is absolutely yummy. We’re making this cookie an option to purchase for the class as a birthday treat if preferred rather than ice cream (or with ice cream if wanted ). The cost is .75 cents each and can be paid for the same way as the ice cream. You may send in cash or check to the school for the amount with a note stating what it’s for (NOTE: if check amount is more than cost, the overage will be applied to the student’s account, as we can’t give change from a check) or you may fund your student’s café account at mypaymentsplus.com. If using a check (which involves the child’s acct) or mypaymentsplus, we need something in writing stating that we have permission to use their account to pay for the treat for the entire class. You may coordinate this by email to your child’s teacher & copy me on it, or they can forward it to me. There is one significant difference in the purchase of the cookies, you will need to place the cookie order 2 weeks before the date needed. This should ensure we are able to get enough of the product in & get them baked for the day needed. On occasion we do not receive what we order. Should that happen, I will let you know so that you can make other arrangements. Please contact me if you have any questions about either of these birthday treats.
We will continue working hard to provide healthy, tasty meals for all our children in the safest way possible. We’re so grateful to be back here together and doing what we love most. With so much uncertainty in our world right now, may we all take some time this month to reflect on the good in our lives. I believe there’s always something, no matter how small it may seem, that we can be thankful for.
Chris Pruitt, Café Manager
