JMMS RISING UP PEER-COACHING BEGINS

At JMMS, we are continuing to partner with Teen Truth to engage our students in building a positive school culture. During our second semester, the JMMS 7th and 8th grade ASB leadership class will present a 10-week series: Rising Up to our campus constituents. There are five modules in this peer mentorship series that focus on the following topics:

  • Building Relationships and Understanding Self - students are supported in developing insight that will enable them to better cope with change and challenges in their relationships with others.

  • Decision-Making and Goal Setting - students learn strategies about how to set goals, make decisions, and how to deal with barriers that stand in their way.

  • Career and Family Exploration - students analyze their own career maps that lead to a better understanding of how personal interests lead to careers or life-role aspirations.

  • Choices and Consequences - students explore their ability to be in control of their choices and learn to think about the ramifications (positive and negative) of those choices.

  • Overcoming Adversity and Building Resilience - students are encouraged to build support networks and an understanding that we can recover from life’s setbacks.

Throughout this series the mentors and students will work together to better understand themselves and their connection to JMMS and the Alpine community. The Rising Up materials are the next step in our TEEN TRUTH campus culture training.

CODING AND MUSIC FOR FIFTH GRADERS - THE WHEEL OF EXPERTS

Our Wheel of Experts program is underway. JMMS Band teacher, Mrs. Rabasco, and our JMMS teacher, Diana Tompkins began teaching piano, recorders, and coding to our Boulder Oaks and Alpine Elementary 5th grade students. These experiences will help build our students' skills and knowledge and ensure a strong connection when they get to JMMS next year.

DUAL IMMERSION BEGINS AT JMMS NEXT YEAR

We are excited about the expansion of our dual immersion program to JMMS next year. We are very much looking forward to our first group of dual immersion six grade students entering JMMS. These students will continue to develop high levels of English and Spanish proficiency. Thanks you teachers, staff and parents for your collaboration and partnership in ensuring a seamless transition from elementary to middle school.

INCOMING 6th GRADE ORIENTATION NIGHT AT JMMS

We have scheduled an orientation for all prospective and incoming 6th-grade students for February.

  • On February 20th at 6:00 pm in the JMMS gym, we will hold a special 6th-grade orientation for parents and students who will be participating in the JMMS Dual Immersion Spanish program next year.
  • On February 22nd, we will bus all of our 5th grade students into JMMS. They will get a chance to tour the school, visit actual classes, learn about the class offerings and electives, meet students and staff, and connect with our student leaders.
  • A 6th grade parent orientation will also be held on February 22nd at 6:30 in the JMMS gym.

FIRST GRADE STUDENT ORIENTATION

We have scheduled first-grade orientations at AES for February 21st at 2:00 pm, and BOES February 28th at 2:00 pm. This meeting is for parents and students. Students will get a chance to visit classrooms and meet the first grade teachers. Current Kindergarteners will be placed in their home school for enrollment. Students who reside in the SHES boundary will be given the opportunity to prioritize their school choice.

READY BREAK CAMPS

The Alpine Education Foundation in conjunction with the District will be offering summer ReadyBreak Camps hosted by some of our amazing teachers and staff. The camps that will be offered include art, coding and robotics, physical education and sports, cooking and nutrition, and “Living Classroom” in Wright’s Field. Camp dates, campus locations and costs will be announced March 5th. Registration will open online on March 12th. Camp information will be posted at https://aef4kids.org/ready-break-summer-camps-2018. Online registration will be available on this site as well.

Any questions can be directed to readybreak@aef4kids.net.

ENROLLMENT LETTERS FOR 2018-19 SCHOOL YEAR

We are proactively working on planning for the 2018-19 school year. Enrollment confirmation letters have been sent home to all parents. Letters should be returned as soon as possible. This information is critical to making sound decisions. As a small District, small fluctuations in enrollment have a huge impact on the budget and staffing decisions.

ANNUAL SYNERGY UPDATE VERIFICATION

The AUSD annual update verification on Synergy will be starting soon. Parents of all current students will need to update their address, phone, medical and other information for the next school year. We will be notifying parents as soon as this becomes available for us.

PARENT EDUCATION NIGHT

As part of our Parent Education Series, we will be holding an informational presentation on head injuries on Tuesday, February 20th from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm in the Boulder Oaks Auditorium. Learn what signs to look for when a child sustains an injury to the head. Traumatic brain injury can happen from playing football, skateboarding or something as simple as falling off a bike. Come out and see what we as a community can do prevent head injuries.

AUSD NEW LOGO ANNOUNCEMENT

We are pleased to announce the new AUSD logo. The logo reflects the Cuyamaca Mountains of east county San Diego, the sun rising and the Engelmann Oak, which can be locally found and is best known as “the rarest tree-oak species in the United States”. A HUGE thanks to all staff, students, and parents who submitted options for a new logo.

6th GRADE CAMP

JMMS' 6th graders enjoyed an annual tradition in the mountains of Cuyamaca. Students shared rooms and slept on bunk beds, walked on hikes, competed in science experiments and learned about nature all while sharing a once in a lifetime experience.

We can't wait to hear all about it.

Did you know it's more than just hiking and camp fires. Our 6th graders experience a curriculum designed by credentialed teachers to take full advantage of the Next Generation Science Standards. Lessons incorporate trail experiences and citizen scientist projects to create hands-on learning that is meaningful, memorable, and fun. For many students, the weeklong, overnight experience is their first trip away from home and transforms how they feel about science and themselves as learners.

PTA DINE OUTS - ALPINE CHILL

February 7th is an elementary early dismissal day. Grab the kids and head over to the Alpine Chill for a PTA fundraiser. A certain percentage of each yogurt sold will go back to help AUSD PTAs fund events for our schools.

Mark your calendars for these future PTA Dine Out dates.

February 19th and the 3rd Monday of every month - Subway

March 7th - Rubios and Alpine Chill

Boulder Oaks PTA is off and running in 2018! We want to thank everyone who participated in our annual Ice Skating with Principal at Viejas as well as a big thank you to all the families that joined in on the fun at our Bring a Parent to Lunch Day! On February 20th, Baron’s Market is hosting a Farmer’s Market for the students at BOES. Students are looking forward to an afternoon of shopping and learning about all the different fruits and vegetables that Baron’s has to offer. Our next PTA meeting will be held on Thursday, Feb. 1 at 7:30am in our Library.

Here at AES we are starting our month off with our minimum day movie, Lego Ninjago, on Wednesday, February 7th from 1-3pm. Our annual fun run is on Valentine’s Day. McTeacher Night is on Thursday, February 22nd from 5-7pm. This is an awesome event where our teachers get to serve dinner at McDonald's for our families.

AEF 5K FUN RUN SPONSORSHIP

The Alpine Education Foundation is looking for sponsors for the upcoming 5k Fun Run that is going to be held on February 25th this year. AEF would appreciate any support from the community, businesses and families in the form of sponsorship.
