Library Updates: From Ms. Amy

We had a great time in our library this past month! Ask your learner about the stories we have been reading together! Below are some photos of artwork from various library lessons.

APL Cards:

Austin Public Library’s Libraries for All program allows all students in Travis County to receive a free Austin Public Library card. Parents who opted into this program during registration should have received an email from sirsi@aupl.sirsi.net with login information for their student’s Austin Public Library account. Students also received this email in their DVISD email accounts. This email explains how to log into the account and use it. The Austin Public Library printed cards for students who haven’t received cards yet. The cards should be arriving at our school soon, and we will distribute them once we receive them.

Check out this Austin Public Library Card FAQ page for more information. Click here to view a video that demonstrates how to use an APL student library card.

Please contact Newton Collins Librarian, Amy Gonzalez, at (512) 386-3914 or at amy.gonzalez@dvisd.net if you have any additional questions. You may call the Austin Public Library at 512-974-7475 with any account questions.

One School, One Book

We have decided to read the book Wishtree, by Katherine Applegate for our 2022 One School, One Book initiative. Teachers are reading the book aloud to their homeroom classes. Every few weeks classes are doing a small activity to celebrate the book. At the end of the book, we will have a school-wide celebration. Ask your learner to tell you all about it!

Please reach out to our librarian, Amy Gonzalez, at amy.gonzalez@dvisd.net if you have any questions.

Specials Update: From Music Class

This month in music class, we have been celebrating Hispanic Heritage month by learning all about the different instruments and dances we can find in hispanic culture! We have learned that music in hispanic culture is very important because it is full of tradition and it brings our friends and families together by using fun rhythms that make you want to dance. These rhythms are created by many different percussion instruments, so we learned how to play some of our own! Take a look at some of the songs and dances we have been learning!

FALL FESTIVAL:

We are a week and a half away from the Newton Collins PTA Fall Festival. If you know Maria Delune, please tell her THANK YOU! She has put in so much to make this an amazing event. For those who have volunteered, we are going to host a virtual “run through” on Wednesday, October 26 at 8 p.m. Join the call so you can see how the event will be run and your role! Haven’t signed up yet? You can here. (Link for the call will be sent next week.)

We are still looking for bake sale and cake walk donations for the Fall Festival. The bake sale items are cookies/bread/snacks that we will sell individually, the Cake Walk is an entire cake for one of the booths at the festival. Email hollybeuke@yahoo.com if you’re interested in either or if you have a neighbor/friend/chef you’d like to recommend.

Do you want to see your family’s name on a pumpkin at the fall festival? Donate today to make that happen. Gifts of $50+ will be recognized.

Any other questions or concerns, please reach out to Holly Hazlett at (901) 490-8535
