5th Grade News
September 2016
Welcome!!
Parents,
Welcome to 5th Grade! We are so excited for this year! We are enjoying the time getting to know your children. Their days here have truly been non-stop.
Reading/Social Studies
The theme for the first unit is Taking a Stand. Sometimes conditions or situations in life force people to take action. The students ponder, what makes people take action? The students will also explore other text features such as Character/Setting, Making Inferences, Main Idea, Problem/Solution, and Drawing Conclusions. In Language Arts, we are identifying different sentence types, identifying subjects and predicates, as well as correctly utilizing editing techniques.
In social studies our main focus this month will be map skills, geography and what it takes to be a good citizen.
*Coming Soon: The 50 States Quiz– we will sending that date out very soon!
Math
The mathematical focus of this unit is whole number and decimal place value, addition and subtraction. Students will examine how whole numbers and decimals are written, compared and ordered. They will estimate solutions and solve problems involving addition and subtraction of whole numbers and decimals.
*Topic 1 math assessment Tuesday, Sept. 6th.
Science
The purpose of our first unit is to provide time for students to explore the scientific processes, methods and tools needed to investigate scientific questions. Time is built in to allow for students to practice and teacher modeling to occur. An emphasis should not be placed on the science content within the lessons but on the act of “doing science."
