Science: Students will use their water cycle activity notes to create an 8 frame story (comic strip style) about the adventures of a water molecule. This project will be due on February 8th. I will post the assignment on Google Classroom.
Manners Banquet
I know I've mentioned this before, but just as a reminder: It is not a dance, and the students will not be asking a date (that always seems to be the biggest misconception).
Before the day of the banquet, I will do a couple of lessons on table manners with my homeroom. I find that doing that helps the kids relax a little during the banquet. I like to talk to them about what to do with their napkin, which fork to use first, how to butter their bread, how to pass the salad dressing. We also talk about how to have polite conversations. My favorite part is when I teach them how to pull the chair out to help a girl sit down. Students will be seated in a boy/girl pattern, so I always have my boys pull the chair for the young lady. Since I don't have chairs, I'll be asking one of the fourth grade teachers if we can borrow their room for our practice.
On the day of the event, students will have their pictures taken before we go to the club. We'll ride the buses to the club (about 15 minutes), then go inside and sit down in our preassigned tables. Each table will have one adult and seven students. Other than the fifth grade teachers, the other adults at the tables may include our principal and assistant principals, counselors, principal of the middle school, district board members or administrators. The children will eat and then watch a slide show. After we are done, we will return to the school.
Please remember that only the parents who have volunteered to be servers should attend. Mrs. Martin has sent out two flyers with banquet information, so you should have already been in contact with her if you want to volunteer to be a server.
One last thing...we're asking students to wear "Sunday best", and please remember that they should still adhere to the district dress code.
Math
Science
Climate is the weather of an area averaged over long periods of time. Climate encompasses larger areas. For example, the United States sits in a Temperate Zone, that is our climate.
We also learned about how the water cycle can be a long and arduous process for the water molecules. For example, a water molecule in a drop of rain could end up as ground water, making its way underground into a cavern where it ends up in an underground river and eventually travels out to the ocean. That process could take decades. Or they could end up in a stream where it is sipped up by a cow. Eventually, they pass through the cow, end up on the ground, where they are evaporated and end up back on a cloud. I did a really cool activity to help the students understand the new concepts (see the photos), and they may have shown you their bracelets.
