SCHOOL NURSES
Dear Parents:
I would like to welcome you all and your students back to school. I am looking forward to working with your children this school year. There are a few things I would like to cover:
Health Concerns: Please let myself or Mrs. Randi know if you child has severe allergies, health conditions that require monitoring is school (asthma, diabetes), or any health related restrictions/concerns. Also, please provide the school with the appropriate care plan/physicians orders.
Medications: Medications will not be administered to any student without a doctor’s order and parent permission. This includes over the counter medications like Tylenol and Ibuprofen. If your child requires medication in school because of a medical condition (inhaler, insulin, epi-pen) I will need a signed doctor’s order and a parent’s signature. A prescription label is not acceptable as it is not a doctor’s order.
Immunizations: Students are required to be complaint with school required immunizations to attend school in Colorado. Students are complaint if any of the following are met:
· School required immunizations are up to date
· A medical exemption is on file at the school
· A non-medical exemption is on file at school
Starting this school year a certificate of non-medical exemption is required by state law. This can be obtained by having your doctor sign the non-medical exemption form or submit the certificate of nonmedical exemption you will receive once the online CDPHE Immunization Education Module is completed. This online module can be found at https://www.dcphrapps.dphe.state.co.us/storyline360/story.html
Parent signatures are no longer accepted for non-medical exemptions per Colorado State Law.
Screenings: Per Colorado State Law all students in kinder, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, & 9th grades must have a vision and hearing screening. We completed a lot of these at the school registration and CHAMP event. If your child did not attend CHAMP we will be conducting screenings within the next couple of months. If you do not want you child to be screened, please contact the school.
When to Keep Your Student Home during COVID-19 Pandemic:
If your child has any “major” symptom he/she will not be allowed to come to school and will be sent home if they develop the symptom at school. Other students will be assessed on a case by case basis.
COVID-19 symptoms:
Feeling feverish or a fever over 100.3 Headache
New or worsening cough Sore throat
New loss of taste of smell Congestion/Runny Nose
Shortness of Breath Nausea/Vomiting or Diarrhea
If your child is sent home with symptoms the school will advise you when he or she may return to school.
COVID-19 Testing- One of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s recommendations to keep schools open this year is serial COVID-19 testing. Many of you have completed this permission form already – Thank you! Your student will be getting a non-invasive COVID-19 test every 2-3 weeks. These tests are quick and simple. The test is collected by inserting a small q-tip about an inch into each nostril. This is not the test that goes all the way up the nose. Most students find the tests that we will be using to be a little uncomfortable but not painful. You will be notified if your student tests positive.
As always, students with a diagnosis other than COVID-19 may not attend school until they are free from a fever without any medication for at least 24 hours and/or until their vomiting and/or diarrhea have been gone for 24 hours without the use of medication. This has always been the rule- it is not new with the pandemic.
Masks are highly encouraged and recommended this year. The delta variant of COVID-19 is 2 times as contagious as previous variants. This means that a person infected with the delta variant will infect more people than if infected with previous COVID-19 infections.
Visit the School Nurse Corner on the school district website! Care plans, doctors order forms, immunization information, COVID-19 information and more can be found there. From the home page click departments > Nursing > School Nurse Corner.
I hope you and your students have a great and healthy school year! Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help you!
MUSIC
Dear Haskin parents,
I am writing this letter to keep you informed about music at Haskin elementary. We want to keep all students as safe as possible while at school. The elementary guidelines for music allow for singing and/or playing of instruments if the students wear a mask combined with 3 feet distancing. If a student does not wear a mask, they can still sing/play at 6 feet distancing. My classroom is large enough to accommodate 3 feet distancing and most students are willing to wear a mask when we get to sing.
I strongly encourage students to bring a mask to school every day even if it is only used in music so that we can sing. I will also provide disposable masks for those students who happen to forget their mask on any given day. There are a few students who have chosen to not wear a mask and I will support their decision without repercussions. I feel strongly that even though they may be separated from the rest of their peers that the distance is still close enough to make sure everyone is included in our daily instruction.
The 4th graders will have a special musicians mask so that they can play the recorder and be distanced 3 feet. One mask per student will be provided by our school district and I suggest that they keep this mask with their recorder and their music folder. This year I am asking every 4th grade student to purchase their own recorder. The cost will be $4 and can be paid at the elementary office. The due date will be September 9, 2021.
Unfortunately, at this time it does not appear that will be having concerts until the COVID-19 pandemic allows for larger gatherings. Haskin elementary students will still be learning music to perform, it will just look different for a while. There will be recorded performances and I hope to pull off a few livestreams so that our parents and community can enjoy the hard work of our musicians.
My goal is to continue to keep our kids as safe as possible while providing an excellent musical education. I look forward to making music with your children. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
Thanks for being so supportive of the performing arts here in Center,
Mr. Swanson
Haskin Elementary Physical Education
Welcome,
I hope this newsletter finds you all in best regards. I hope your summer was filled with joy, and lots of sunshine.
I am excited to be back and provide educational physical fitness to my K-5 students. Hopefully, the students had time to get some kind of fitness in during the summer.
We will continue to work with Northern Colorado Physical Education Department on assessments, and Fitness Gram. We started out with volleyball skills for 2nd – 5th . Kinder and 1st grades worked on basic psychomotor skills and gym safety rules & procedures. The next couple weeks we will do Fitness Gram, Flag football, and chase n flee games. Please reach out to me if you ever have questions.
Best Regards,
Joe M. Garcia
