Teaching about Genocide
in the Social Studies Classroom
Join us to learn about best practices related to teaching about genocide in your social studies classroom
In the state of Michigan, all schools are required to provide at least six hours of age- and grade-appropriate instruction about genocide to students in grades 8 through 12. This two-day, on-site professional learning experience will help build teachers’ content knowledge and equip them with the skills and expertise they need to teach about genocide effectively.

Day 1: Teaching about the Holocaust

Grades 8-12 teachers and instructional coaches
Agenda
- Guided tour of the new exhibit
- Whole group morning session focused on pedagogical principles for teaching the Holocaust and trauma-informed practice (by Rick Schaffner and Brennden Bernard)
- First breakout afternoon session: choice of either "Analyzing Propaganda/Media Literacy" (by Katie Chaka Parks) or "Contemporary Antisemitism" (by Ruth Bergman)
- Second breakout afternoon session: choice of either "Preventing Genocide: Lessons from the Holocaust" (by Jamie Wise) or "Jewish Refugees and the Holocaust"
- Reflection and closing (by Aliza Tick)
