WEAR GOLD FOR CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH SEPTEMBER 28TH
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Cancer affects so many people, even our young children. Here at Brummer, Mrs. Post's son, Caleb, is battling cancer again.
Mrs. Post: Caleb is my 10-year-old son. He has been battling cancer since he was 4 months old. His cancer came back when he was 1 years old, 8 years old, and now at 10. He is in fourth grade at his school. He likes Pokémon, video games, movies, music, and traveling. Our family will have to travel all the way to Seattle, Washington for his next treatment. Childhood cancer only gets 4% funding for research, so bringing more awareness is needed.
In an effort to bring more awareness to Childhood Cancer, Brummer is going to "GO GOLD" on Thursday, September 28. We hope everyone is able to participate so Brummer will be colored in Gold!

Students met for the first time in their Bobcat Dens on Wednesday, September 20th. Students enjoyed getting acquainted with each other while participating in some fun group activities together. They also spent time reviewing what it means to be a B.O.B.C.A.T. It was very heartwarming to have our K-5 Bobcat Dens back together again! Go Bobcats!

School Improvement Surveys
As part of our continuous improvement efforts, this year our district will be participating in a systems-level accreditation process with Cognia. Cognia is an accreditation organization working with schools around the world to improve their systems. The accreditation we are seeking through the process will extend to all the schools within our district.
One part of the accreditation process includes seeking feedback from our students, staff and families. During the first week in October, surveys will be shared with staff, families, and with students in grades 3-12. Participation in the survey is optional. Families will be provided with a link in our weekly newsletter. Staff will be sent a link via email. Students will be offered a chance to participate in the survey during school. Each survey has two components- a portion asking for demographic information and a portion asking for feedback on our district’s culture and climate. The survey questions and response choices come directly from Cognia, the accreditation organization, and were not written by our staff.
Within the culture and climate portion, students will be asked to think about a prompt and select four choices from a list of words that describe how they feel or think about a topic.
Students in grades 3-5 are asked the following three questions:
Which four of the following words or phrases best describe, in general, what you think of your teachers?
Choices are: Honest, Fun, Caring, Active, Lazy, Curious, Don't Care, Mean, Fake, and Unfair
Which four of the following words or phrases best describe, in general, the things you most often DO while in class at school?
Choices are: Listen to teachers, Complete short projects, Complete long projects, Write, Think, Memorize, Complete worksheets, Work with others, Work alone, Make presentations, and Take tests
Which four of the following words would best describe, in general, how you feel while at school?”
Choices are: Happy, Angry, Challenged, Bored, Interested, Afraid, Encouraged, Confused, Excited, Lonely, Supported, and Tired.
During the demographic portion of the survey, which can be skipped in whole or part, students are asked:
I am a... (Optional):
Boy
Girl
I am... (Optional):
American Indian or Alaska Native
Asian
Black or African American
Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander
White
Two or more races
I am... (Optional):
Hispanic
Not Hispanic or Latino
My grade in school is...
3rd Grade
4th Grade
5th Grade
How long have you been a student at this school?
This is my 1st year
2 years
3 years
4 years or more
If you wish, you can direct your child to skip over the demographic portion of the survey. Students can also skip any individual questions within the demographic portion. Your child is still able to provide feedback on the culture and climate portion of the survey without completing the demographic questions. You are also able to opt your child out of the survey by contacting the school principal before the end of September. If on the day of the survey any child wishes to opt themselves out of responding, that is allowed as well.
At our school, students will be administered the survey in the classroom by their teacher during the first week of October. Teachers grades 3-5 will provide the specific date of the survey in their upcoming classroom communications.
Survey results will be used by our district leadership team to determine future areas of focus as well as strengths of our district.
