Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 11th February 2022
Keeping healthy and safe!
Children's Mental Health Awareness Week
On Wednesday we had a PSHE day and children thought about physical health and well-being, growing and changing, and keeping safe.
Below is some of the work from across the school.
Year 2 - Emotion Dragonflies
We also created waterbugs with advice on how to support someone experiencing loss, change or bereavement.
Later on, we looked at risks and dangers in different situation and even role-played dialling 999 where we learnt all about the importance of providing clear detailed information in an emergency.
Year 3 - Healthy body and healthy mind
In Year 3, we thought about how keeping our bodies healthy can help to keep our minds healthy, we investigated the impact of exercise on our mind and agreed that we all felt more awake and energised after exercise. We discussed things that were healthy for our mind, heart and muscles and things that were damaging, thinking carefully about how we could make healthier choices both in school and at home.
We also looked at how we can defeat unhelpful thoughts which can make us feel unhappy using our ‘Thought Superhero’. We practised using our ‘Thought Superhero’ to help us show resilience when faced with challenges. Year 3 were set a challenge to recreate a paper sculpture using only a piece of paper and a pair of scissors, we kept reminding ourselves to battle the unhelpful thoughts like, ‘It’s impossible’ and use our Thought Superhero to change those thoughts to, ‘We just haven’t worked it out yet,’ and ‘We can do it if we work together.’
Keeping Healthy in Year 1
In Year 1, the children focused on ways to keep healthy, the people who help us stay healthy and they also explored different feelings we might have and how we act as a result of these.
The class firstly focused on hygiene and how it is important that we keep ourselves clean. The children explored the importance of hand-washing and how this keeps us healthy.
The children were given some glitter to put on their hands to represent microbes and other germs. They touched things near them and high-fived other children in the class to show how easily these spread. The children then tried to wash the glitter off with water and found this tricky as some of the germs (glitter) still appeared on their hands. They tried again with soap and found this was more successful in removing all of the glitter.
From this experiment the children said:
‘We must wash our hands often because we don’t want our germs to spread.’ – Gabby
‘Germs can multiply if they stay on our hands.’ – James
‘You must wash your hands regularly or germs will go in your mouth and you will get ill.’ – Harvey
‘Use soap or the germs won’t go away.’ – Noah
After this the children thought about the importance of brushing their teeth and what might happen if they don’t do this enough. The children had a go at another experiment to see what happens when plaque builds up on teeth and how there is a larger and thicker amount produced when sugary foods are eaten.
From this experiment the children said:
‘If we get too much plaque and leave it, it will be harder to come off.’ – Isabelle
‘If you don’t brush your teeth, you will get cavities.’ – Jacob
‘You must brush your teeth for two minutes, twice a day.’ – Grace
Year 6
Early Years - The Power of Positivity
This week in Reception, we have been thinking about the importance of positive thinking and a 'go-for-it' attitude. We talked about all the wonderful things we have in our lives and the things that make us feel happiest. We used our 'magic paintbrushes' to paint our happy thoughts and then wrote about them. We found out that we all have so much to be grateful and positive about. Next time we are feeling sad, we will focus on these positive thoughts to help the sadness disappear.
Year 5 keeping ourselves safe
Year 4 unique special identities
Once they had finished looking at similarities and differences, they played guess who using a range of characteristics to identify people in their class.
Later the children made wordle art featuring many of the characteristic that contribute to who they are.
Key Stage 1 Multi-skills Tournament
At the end of the event we added up the scores and announced Team Tigers as our Multi-skills winners!
Collective Worship By Year 4 - Peacemakers
After a vote the school decided that David Attenborough should be the next person who should receive the Noble Peace Prize.
A wonderful thought provoking worship - well done Year 4.
Learning about the heart in Year 6
Reflecting on Peace in Nursery
Nursery shared what they thought peace was, they had a quiet minute, then shared the story of 'Peace at Last'.

Community News
Dear School leaders, Governors, Teachers, Pupils and Families
Ripon Together is a not-for-profit partnership organisation which brings people together to work on projects and activities to make the city of Ripon a friendly and thriving place to live and a welcoming place to visit. For more details please see the website, www.ripontogether.com
The Summer of Play 2021 was an idea to help children, after COVID lockdowns, see and try out some activities which they may have missed out on. And for organisations and clubs to present themselves to those children and families.
We are now formulating plans for 2022 and we enclose a link to a short survey where we would like a little help from you. We want to offer things that are relevant, useful and fun for children, young people and families, connecting organisations and showing what is available for them around Ripon.
The events will take place in August, when the schools are closed and we don’t expect schools to be directly involved, we just want views, advice and information on how best to offer something good.
If there is anyone in your organisation who could give us their ideas, then please ask them to complete the survey. The more information we have the better that we can prepare.
Any questions or queries can be emailed to info@ripontogether.com or call David Ingham 07775 731276.
Yours sincerely
Directors of Ripon Together.
