Mary Cassatt was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on May 22,1844. She studied for a short time at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and then got private lessons from the teachers at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. She was part of the artistic movements of American Impressionism and modern art. Many of her paintings were realistic-looking mothers and children. She also painted self-portraits.
