Mental Illness
Bipolar Disorder
"Bipolar disorder causes dramatic highs and lows in a person's mood, energy and ability to think clearly," relates to Rose Mary because she is very indecisive about her moods. One day she will be uplifting and optimistic and the next day she won't leave her bed. For example, when she was teaching, she would love to go and teach and help her students, but the next day the kids would have to drag her out of bed.
Civil Disobedience
Rex displays Civil Disobedience in lots of situations. Civil Disobedience is when soemone does something against the law knowingly and willing to get caught. An example of this is when Rex would blow off paying bills and they would all just run away from the government.
Alcohol Alert
"Addiction is based in the brain. It involves memory, motivation, and emotional state," relates to Rex when he tries to quit drinking for Jeanette's 10th birthday. When he stops drinking he has mager withdrawals and he doesn't leave the bedroom for days. This represents a lack of motivation. He has trouble showing emotions normally because his body isn't used to it yet.
Parental Rights
In my opinion, Rex and Rose Mary should have lost their parental rights based o the law. They loved their kids a lot and raised them well but a lot of illegal stuff was going on during the kids child hood and the government had many reasons to take them away from them. For example, Rex's long term alcoholsim was just one example of why they shuld have been taken away
School Attendance
Educational Neglect happens a lot in the Glass Castle. Rex and Rose MAry really don't care whether or not their kids go to school. Rose MAy herself doesn't even want to go to school. When Jeanette was really little she never really went to school until she was around 10 years old.
Homelessness
The HEARTH Act could have really helped Jeanette and her family. IN my opinion, the Walls didn't want the help. If they really wanted to get up off their feet they would have done something about it. The HEARTH act would have helped Jeanette, Lori, and Brian though.
