World Language Updates!
French 1B has studied a really important verb-ALLER- which means “to go.” They have done lots of practice using self-paced online games. Students had a speaking PBA and completed a project showing places in their neighborhoods, along with giving directions in French. They are reading “Brandon Brown et la conquête de Québec” and are beginning to learn food names and how to order in a restaurant. They recently discovered that a 2-pound white truffle sold at auction for $330,000.00!
German students are finishing their unit on careers. The next unit focuses on food vocabulary and cuisine. Students will be practicing how to order in a restaurant and reading a menu in German. Also, students will learn more past tense verbs and do a creative project about their dream trip in the past tense. Students should be studying vocabulary twenty minutes per day.
In Spanish 1A, we have begun Lesson 6 which includes: Clothing, comparison of the verbs Saber vs Conocer, uses of Indirect Object Pronouns and the Preterite (past) tense. In addition to 4 chapter quizzes, this Unit will include a Performance Based Assessment as well. Continue to encourage students to spend 15 minutes/day studying vocabulary; student-generated Quizzlets are great way to accomplish this goal. Help sessions are Wednesday mornings, 8:00-8:30 am
International Night at CMS!
Students and parents had a wonderful time at International Night in February. Each world language class researched a different country and presented their country for International Night. Overall 35 countries were represented! Teachers of the World Languages Department are thrilled that they could celebrate international understanding and diversity at such a well-attended event. Thank you to all of the students and parents who helped make this event so successful.
Math Updates!
7th Grade Math will be working on our Geometry Unit. This unit explores the concepts of angle relationships, triangle relationships, circles and complex shapes. We will use theoretical and real-world examples to help students explore the ways in which shapes impact the world around us, from architecture to industry.
Math 8 students will explore how to solve systems of linear equations through graphing, substitution and elimination. They will apply this skill to real world situations.
Science Happenings!
For the month of March, we will be leaving our Organ systems unit and moving on to the Biome unit. In this unit we will be learning about each of the Earth's biomes and the characteristics that define them.
If your child hasn't already shared all the details of our most recent lab---"Frog dissection," be sure to ask them about their experience! For many of our students this was the highlight of the unit!!
Social Studies---It's a Wrap!
We are nearing the end of our time in SW Asia/Middle East. Our scholars have been immersed in the US involvement in the area from the Persian Gulf War through today. Did your scholar tell you about our Paper Bag Puppet project? It was a wonderful chance for students to teach each about regional concerns … in a creative way! We are wrapping up with a study of the governments and economies of Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. Please watch your teacher’s website for information on upcoming quizzes and tests. Next stop, SE Asia 😊 Reminder: The Junior Achievement trip that was cancelled for the snow day (Mrs. Militana’s students) has been rescheduled for Monday, March 18th.
ELA Noteworthy News!
This month we will begin student book talks where the students will try to persuade their peers to read the book that they are currently reading. In a few weeks, we will begin an Argumentative Writing Unit to get students ready for the writing portion of the Georgia Milestones.
Reading Rocks in 7th Grade!
We are continuing Part 2 of our historical fiction book club unit. The students have chosen a historical fiction book to read and we are reading and discussing the novel every day. The skills we are reviewing and continue to cover are theme, perspective, internal/external conflict, and how historical events are affecting the characters in our books. The students seem very engaged in the book we are reading and we are excited to continue this unit!
From the Counseling Corner!
During the past month, Crabapple Middle School’s Counseling Department has been working with all grades on career lessons within GCIS (Georgia Career Information System). During these career lessons, 6th graders took a career interest survey, 7th graders learned about finances and career clusters, and 8th graders took career aptitude assessments and completed a 4 year graduation plan. Please do not hesitate to speak to your children about their interests and how it can align to further educational and career choices and opportunities.
Georgia Milestones and EOC assessments are just around the corner....
