Hybrid 4 days a week
We are looking forward to students currently in hybrid returning to 4 days per week. We also want to emphasize the importance of daily attendance both in-person and online in order for students to be ready for next year.
Attendance
Starting April 22, grades K, 1 and 2 will begin attending 4-days per week.
Starting May 6, grades 3, 4 and 5 will begin attending 4-days per week.
If students do not attend, please check with their teacher through email or Google Classroom to make up missing work.
Students will need to charge their devices every night and bring it to school as teacher directed.
Wednesdays will continue to be remote, and teachers will be available for office hours and small group support.
Food Service
All students attending in-person will be able to receive free lunch each day.
There will be no breakfast service at school on April 22 and May 6 (for those starting in-person).
Breakfast will not be available onsite each morning. Students can pick up breakfast sacks at the end of each day and eat at home before coming to school.
On Tuesday’s, students can pick up an extra breakfast for Wednesday while learning at home; however, there will be no lunch provided for Wednesdays.
Remote only students will need to register for a 5-day meal pick up which will be available at Yelm High School and Lackamas Elementary on Wednesday’s only starting April 28 from 11:30am - 1:00pm. Please look for a separate email to complete meal registration.

SBA Testing
WA State Spring Testing Update Grades 3-8 and 10
Superintendent of Public Schools, Chris Reykdal made the announcement last week that students in WA State will not participate in the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) given to grades 3-8 and 10 or the Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS) given to grades 5, 8 and 11 this spring as the US Department of Education did not look favorably on the state’s testing waiver request. Instead, students will participate next fall. He made the determination that students would be better served engaging in learning activities given the move to more in-person instruction across the state and that locally determined assessment tools would be more informative to the instructional process. This means that students will likely be participating in two different state testing windows next year, both fall and spring. Any testing done in fall would be related to the previous year’s content. There are two state assessments that were not moved, the English Learner Progress Assessment (ELPA) and the WA-AIM. If your student is participating in either of these assessments you would already have received communication from your school about this.
Transfers & Nonresident Requests for 2021-2022
Approval or denial of transfer requests is based on criteria outlined in board policy 3131 for resident and 3141 for nonresident students.
Key Dates for 2021-2022 Student Transfer Requests to attend Yelm Community Schools
FIRST ROUND - February 1 to March 15, 2021
Applications received by March 15 will be given first priority and will be notified of the district decision by April 30. New applications may be subject to a wait list and should register at their resident school until a decision is made.
SECOND ROUND - March 16 to May 31, 2021
Applications received by May 31 will be given second priority and notified of the district decision by June 30. New applications may be subject to a wait list and should register at their resident school until a decision is made.
After June 1, 2021 through the First Day of School
Applications received after May 31 will be considered in August on a case-by-case basis and may have to wait until actual enrollment counts in September before receiving notification.
School Capacity and Waiting Lists
Many of our schools are experiencing over-crowding in some grade levels. This limits their ability to accept transfer students. Students denied based on capacity will be assigned to their resident school and placed on a waiting list for their requested school and notified if a space becomes available. Consideration of transfers from waiting lists typically does not occur until late August or early September.
Transportation
Parents will provide transportation for students who voluntarily attend a school outside their attendance area.
A Note About "Feeder" Schools
Something to think about before requesting a transfer is that our elementary schools have designated "feeder" middle schools. If you request an elementary school that feeds into a middle school outside of your home attendance school, you will either have to continue to request transfers and transport your child to and from school, or your child will have to separate from his or her peer group when moving up to middle school.
