Chess Success
Congratulations are in order once again for some of our outstanding chess players, who competed earlier this week, taking 1st place and progressing as regional champions to the national finals.
This was another significant win at very high levels of competition, and we wish all our budding 'Grandmasters' every success for the finals, with thanks to Associate Principal, Aone Laufili and the parents who helped make it possible.
NAMSA Conference
Next week, the Auckland Normal Schools (ANI, Mt Eden, Takapuna, Papakura, Sunnybrae, Epsom) are hosting a conference for the national Normal and Model Schools Association of Aotearoa (NAMSA), an annual opportunity for Normal and Model school delegates from across the country to network and discuss areas of common professional interest as a larger group, alongside Teacher Education providers.
The 'Normal' school name may seem to be little more than a curiousity to many, but in fact it relates to our long heritage as key partners in initial teacher education. The 'Normal' name actually dates back to 16th Century France, where the first École Normale were established with the aim of effectively preparing teachers for the classroom, eventually spreading as a concept to many other countries across Europe, the U.S., Canada and beyond.
As such, while NZ trainee teachers learn their craft in a range of school contexts, Normal Schools today continue to work in partnership with University and other providers as a wider network of dedicated facilities tasked with modelling effective teacher practice and knowledge.
It is an ongoing legacy of the New Zealand education system that we take seriously as a school, and we see tremendous benefits not only in investing in the wider teaching profession, but also in maintaining our focus on exemplary teaching and learning.
Every parent knows the value that great teachers add to the lives and education of students in so many ways, and - to this end - we're proud to be active members of the NAMSA organisation, and of the role we play in helping grow great teachers for the future.
