Rifka's Development

Since her family began their journey, Rifka has become mentally strong. She has been through a lot over the course of a couple of years. This will help her throughout her life.

Prejudice

Before World War 1 through World War 2, the Jewish religion was not well liked. During the timing of the book, Hitler was rising to power and brainwashing the people of Nazi-Germany. The people of Berdechiv felt the same way at this time.
