Foundations for Life Long Learning 4 April 2019
Dear Parents and Staff
We are well into our Lenten journey and in this week’s Gospel we hear of how Jesus was challenged to condemn a woman who the scribes and Pharisees maintained had broken the law. The scribes and Pharisees were considered to be intelligent men who were well-versed in the law and it appears that their aim was to search for ways in which Jesus acted contrary to the laws of the day so that they could bring charges against him. So often in our world today we hear of how people react to situations such as this by becoming aggressive and “fighting fire with fire”. Jesus refused to become tied up in the games that the accusers were playing, choosing, rather, to turn the focus towards their own imperfections. Eventually all of the woman’s accusers left and Jesus told her to “Go your way, and from now on do not sin again”. I sometimes wonder if the woman left that situation truly repentant for her sins or whether she felt she had “got away with something”. Whatever the outcome, Jesus had given her the opportunity to change her life and to try to be a better person.
We all make mistakes and get things wrong sometimes. I certainly appreciate when those I have wronged are able to forgive me and accept my inadequacies. The real challenge, however, is to be able to unconditionally forgive others when they have wronged us. We can’t always be like Jesus but we can certainly try.
SEDER MEAL
Next Thursday after school the staff, along with members from the Parish Pastoral Council, School Board and P&F, will share a Seder meal in the Mother Mary Piazza. This is a re-enactment of the Last Supper that Jesus would have shared with His disciples and provides us with a special way to enter into the events of Holy Week and Easter.
HARMONY DAY
Tomorrow we will be celebrating our many diverse cultural backgrounds with a sign of unity on the school grassed area immediately after Recess and a shared cultural lunch within each of the classes. We would appreciate parents sending along a plate of food for all to share.
ANZAC
As ANZAC Day falls during the second week of the school holidays we will be holding a commemorative service next Thursday at 8.45am. Children who attend any service groups such as Scouts, Cubs or Guides are invited to wear their uniform on the day.
CAKE STALL
The Year Six Social Justice Council will be holding a cake stall next Thursday during Recess and Lunch. There will be a range of cakes and slices (including gluten free options) available for purchase from 20c to $2.00. All proceeds will be forwarded to the Caritas Project Compassion Appeal.
DUTY OF CARE
I have noticed recently that a number of children are arriving at school very early. Please note that we only offer Duty of Care from 8.00am until 3.15pm each day and children must be supervised by parents outside of these times.
We have also had an incident where a child received a very nasty knock to his head due to children playing games after school. As, after school, staff are only available to supervise children at the drive through pick up area, children are not permitted to play any games or go onto any of the play equipment after school.
For the safety of the children please ensure that they are not dropped at school before 8.00am and they are collected promptly at 3.00pm.
FREE DRESS
To celebrate the end of Term children and staff are invited to wear neat casual clothes next Friday, 12 April. As we have the cake stall to raise funds for Caritas there is no need for any donation for the privilege of wearing free dress.

KINDERGARTEN CLASS NEWS
The Kindergarten children have had a wonderful start to Term One and are very excited with their indoor and outdoor learning environments. We are looking forward to the exciting journey ahead for 2019.
The children have enjoyed going for walks around the Notre Dame school site discovering and enjoying the nature playground, visiting their Year Three buddy class and library time with Mrs Sarmardin.
I like playing dress ups. (Georgia) The (nature) playground is fun. (everyone!)
I like playing with dolls. (Grace) We like to climb and run and make things (everyone)
Religious Education
During our mat sessions, we continue to learn about Easter. We read the story about Palm Sunday and the Last Supper when Jesus shared his last meal with his disciples. In class, we acted out the Last Supper by sharing bread and drinking grape juice to represent wine.
The Kindergarten students enjoyed their visit by Father Michael Quynh Do, Notre Dame Parish Priest, on Wednesday 27 March 2019. During his visit, he shared an Easter story.
Literacy
The Kindergarten children listened to a story called ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle and learned about the life cycle of a butterfly.
In our classrooms, we are very excited to have a butterfly kit where we watch the caterpillar grow, form a chrysalis and then turn into a beautiful monarch butterfly.
The butterfly is orange and black. Beautiful.
The Kindergarten class also explored how special their first names are (what their name starts with and having a go at what sound it makes) and the alphabet letters that are used to spell their first name.
I have a two letter e’s in my name. (Eden)
Some start with the letter A.
During week 6, the children had an incursion from Ruth Faulkner Library. The session discussed the benefits of borrowing books, reading books and visiting the local library to borrow a variety of resources. Each Kindergarten child was given a green Better Beginning bag pack to take home and share with their family.
We went on a bear hunt.
I like going to the library.
Integrated
During the Term, the children have enjoyed free painting and drawing self-portraits.
Finger Gym
In the finger gym, the children are practising fine motor skills to develop their muscles in a number of fun hands on activitiesGross motor
During our gross motor fundamental outdoor program, the children have had the opportunity to take part in a number of climbing, jumping, throwing, rolling and balancing stations in small groups.
Numeracy
In Numeracy, the children enjoyed listening to number stories, rhymes, songs, games and learning about numbers 1 to 10. The Kindergarten class have also explored 2D shapes (hands on activities) and also used paper and plastic shapes and nature items to make a picture of a 2D person.
This is me. I am like a shape man.
I made one. It looks like me.
Parent Helpers
Kindergarten staff would like to thank all the parents/caregivers that helped out during Term One.

Week 10 – Book Sale for Caritas Australia
Book donations needed for the library!
On Thursday, 11th April, the Library with the help from our school community and Library Monitors, will hold a second-hand book sale at recess and lunchtime. ALL proceeds will go directly to Caritas Australia for their Project Compassion.
Old and slightly damaged books from the library and unneeded donations will be sold for 20c, 50c or $1. If you have any books that you no longer need at home, you are welcome to donate them to this worthy cause by delivering them to the Library on Tuesday 9th April (please not before this date due to the lack of space) before, during or after school so I can sort them. It’s a great way to recycle books while helping those less fortunate than ourselves.
Thank you for your support,
Mrs Sarmardin
Librarian

Parenting Tip: Talk Less, Listen More.
How does this help with behaviour? Watch below to find out.
Did you know that an estimated 1 in every 7 Australian children, aged four to seventeen years, suffer from mental health or behavioural problems?
With approximately half of all serious mental health issues in adulthood beginning before the age of fourteen?
This is what parents need to know about the mental health problems and developmental conditions in children.

If you were to ask them, many parents would say the thing they are most worried about when it comes to their children becoming teenagers, is drugs, but there is a new addiction that is taking over our teenager’s lives, and that is technology.
We hope you have a wonderful week!
