JANUARY 2023
Principal's Message
As we start the new year, I want to share my excitement and pride in our Corona students and staff!! As you may know, slightly before we left for Winter Break, our little eagles took the second installment of the iReady diagnostic in Reading and Math. The first assessment, given in August, highlighted that our students were significantly higher, in both subjects, compared to the start of the 2021 school year. From August to November of this school year we had an increase of 20% of our students scoring at grade level in Reading and a 16% increase in Math. At every grade level, Kinder – Sixth, guided by our spectacular teaching and support staff, our students demonstrated their determination and hard work to prepare to master their respective grade level expectations. The attached charts also give you a visual representation of the learning that is taking place at our little school. In addition, you should have received an individualized report from your child’s teacher that highlights their progress towards their current grade level of above. Please join me in recognizing and appreciating the efforts of many… Go Eagles!!!

Eagles Can Earn Their Reading Counts Diploma
GOAL: 25 Million Words Read
Parents, did you know that Eagles can earn degrees based on their reading? Each book a student reads is eligible for Reading Counts! points. By taking and passing the Reading Counts! quiz for each book, students collect points. The more points a student earns, the closer a student gets to his reading goals as well as several rewards and prizes.
Students can earn up to four degrees, including Associate, Bachelors, Masters and the highest, a Doctorate. Medals are awarded at each grade level to the student with the highest quiz points! A trophy is awarded at each grade level for the class with the highest quiz points. If students reach the schoolwide goal of reading 25 million words, students will be treated to the event of year, the Battle of Corona, Dr. Flores vs. Mr. Garcia in a sumo wrestling spectacular!
You can check how many Reading Counts! points your student's books are by checking Book Expert Online. Students can also continue their reading online by using the CloudLibrary app to read e-books from the Ontario City Library. Click below to sign up for a library card.

Eagle Eye On...
Hi! My name is Amy Lai and I am the speech-language pathologist at Corona. I grew up in Baldwin Park, CA with my parents and brother and have fond memories of completing my K-12 years in this small city. I have a background in geology and teaching English to speakers of other languages, as well as a master's degree in Communicative Disorders from Cal State LA. After college I spent a few years living and working in South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, and was humbled as I immersed myself in different cultures and different languages. I wish I could say I left speaking Korean, Japanese, Mandarin, and Cantonese but alas, I can only claim to speak Cantonese conversationally, since it is my family language.
My husband and I enjoy experimenting in the kitchen, playing badminton, picnicking, and spending time with our family and friends. We have traveled to the UK, France, and most recently Fiji, and once took the train from LA to New York stopping at various cities along the way. We hope to make it back to South Korea some day as Korean food is up there in our favorites!
This is my first year at OMSD and Corona and it has been a true pleasure working here these past few months. There is a lot to like about Corona, but perhaps what I like most is the sense of community. It makes my heart smile when students wave to me on campus and tell me about their day. I feel proud to see students interacting with their peers and treating others with kindness and empathy. The other week I was working with two of my preschool students, and one student independently looked around the room for a toy to offer to his classmate, who was sad. It was an incredibly sweet moment.
If I could give one piece of advice to parents, it would be to take some time from each day to be present for your child.
Ms. Amy Lai
