Principal's Message
It's been a busy week at Sequoia! In an effort to help the earth and in celebration of Earth Day coming up we started our recycling program at primary and upper grade lunch times. Prior to this week, a group of 6th grade students went out and collected data about what students usually have in their lunch that could be recycled or put in the trash. From that information, they created a slideshow for the entire school that explained the recycling program with visuals of what belongs in the trash and recycle bins. They used actual examples of common lunch time items that they saw from their data collection and made sure it was easy to understand for all grade levels. This week, these same 6th graders have been out at each lunch time helping students make sure that their items get put in the right bin. We've noticed a big change in the amount of waste we are creating which is awesome for our students to see! At our assembly next week, I will talk more about the impact we are having on the planet by making this small change at lunch. Thank you to our 6th grade students and teachers, Mrs. A (science facilitator) and Mr. Yit (custodian) for making this program happen!
Thursday night was our annual STEAM Night and it was a great success! Students from all grade levels took part in color science exploration, catapult and bridge building, coding, art, and more. My particular favorite was the scribble-bots in the science lab! The taco truck was also a popular spot for many parents and students. I want to thank our STEAM Night teacher committee for helping plan and execute this event, the Sonoma County Children's Museum for coming out with several popular activities for our students and especially SPC for sponsoring this great night!
Our annual Fine Arts Day is coming up on May 3rd. Sequoia Student Council is adding to the fun by making it "Color Day" for our school. Each grade level is encouraged to wear a certain color that day (either a t-shirt or head-to-toe!).
Here's a list of the assigned color for each grade:
Kindergarten - Orange (Think Walkathon shirts)
1st - Light Blue
2nd - Purple
3rd - Yellow
4th - Kiwi Green (Think class shirts)
5th - Red
6th - Royal/Dark Blue
We will try to get a whole school picture to show our color spirit. I think this is going to be a great day! If you are interested in volunteering on Fine Arts Day, we definitely still need helpers. Follow the link to sign up: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0f4daeaf22a7f94-sequoias
