Guidance for the 20-21 School Year
Letter from Superintendent Champion
June 10, 2020
Greetings, Medford School District Families,
I am writing to let you know that today we received this guidance from the Oregon Department of Education outlining how to open our schools in the fall in the safest manner possible. There’s a lot in it and we will need time to analyze and assess what this means for the Medford School District. One thing is certain, we will keep you updated as plans develop and provide opportunities for feedback as we progress. If you have questions as you look through the guidance, please submit them here. As we determine next steps, we will post them on an FAQ page on our website.
A few important highlights of the guidance (though this is far from all of it!):
Face coverings are required for some of our staff who come into close contact with students, and recommended for all staff.
Face coverings are not recommended or required for students younger than 6th grade. Face coverings are recommended for students in 6th - 12th grade, but not required.
Physical distancing of up to 6 ft or 35 square feet per student in a space is required. (We will need to calculate what this means for our class sizes and the number of students we can have in a building at one time.)
We will need to stagger where students enter and exit the building and keep track of who’s coming in and out.
Playgrounds will be open to students during the school day (limited groups at a time) and sanitized between use.
We will need to keep student groups together (such as classes) to the extent possible.
We will need to work with our health department in the event of a case or an outbreak.
If you would like to participate in our Anywhere Learning Family Feedback Group, apply here! We will need your thoughts on how we can better support you and your student(s) moving forward.
Just like we did in the spring, we will get through this together! After all, our shared vision is that ALL are learning and learning is for ALL!
Please know that, throughout our planning, we will always keep in mind that our schools must continue to be warm, caring communities, even with these new rules.
Thank you for our continued patience and grace as we work through this together with our students’ best interest in our hearts.
Gratefully,
Bret Champion
Superintendent

Bret Champion
Superintendente
