FROM THE HEART OF MRS. ROGERS
Practicing Failure Well
"SUCCESS is not final, FAILURE is not fatal:
it is the COURAGE to continue that counts."
Remembering the principle taught in that quote is critical in my parenting bag of tricks! Why, you might ask? Because spelling tests, math drills, athletic tryouts, competitions and even college applications happen!! Yep, they happen so fast. One minute you have a first graders struggling to correctly spell those pesky "rule-breaker" words and the next they are waiting to see if they were accepted to their dream college. Disappointment, frustration, tears, anger, and even hopelessness have visited our doorstep over the years. During the course of those years and those experiences there were plenty of wonderful opportunities to fail well. With each failure we tried to focus on what could be learned and what could be left - meaning take from it what you need to do better and leave behind the feelings that will just hold you back. Failing well - knowing how to fall and get back up again - includes:
- Not letting the failure be final - Proverbs 24:16 says, "Though a righteous man falls seven times, he will get back up." In Georgia we just say. . . get back on that horse again!
- Learning what we can from the failure and moving forward
So. . . Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa - help your kiddos to fail well. Dust them off, help them not to wallow in it, and point them to their future!
WHAT'S THE NEWS?
This month in Principles of Freedom, we’ve been exploring the Legislative Branch and the bill writing process. To that end, the students formulated, wrote and presented a proposed piece of legislation that they will send off to a congressional representative in the hopes of seeing their bill come to life. I believe that active citizenship is the best way to learn about our government’s processes and our responsibilities. Along the way, the students are finding out about their passions and convictions in addition to having healthy discourse on issues facing our nation today. - Mr. Turner

7th-11th Grade PSAT Preparation
This Wednesday our 7th-11th grade students will have testing during all of the morning hours. The 7th and 8th graders will take the 8/9 PSAT. This is a version of the PSAT that is designed for younger students. The 9th-11th grade students will take the actual PSAT. 11th grade students scoring in the top percentile on the PSAT in the nation will be eligible for the National Merit Scholarship.
Performance is linked to adequate rest and a good nutrition. You can help your student's performance simply by ensuring they get a good night's rest and a well-balanced breakfast and make sure they are at school on time.
Students should bring a scientific calculator and 2 #2 pencils.
