Happy New Year Elsie Rogers Families

Welcome back to the second half of our school year. We have had some additions to the Elsie Rogers Family if you have not already heard - Congrats to Ms Givens and Mrs. Mauro as they both gave birth within days of one another. Each has a sweet baby girl to snuggle! With the departure of both ladies for the time being we welcome Mrs. Kelleher (coverage for Ms Givens) and Miss Chesnutt (coverage for Mrs. Mauro)!

The life skill that we will be working on as a school this month is PERSEVERANCE. Our goal is to instill in everyone that we do not give up when things get difficult. As our daily Words of Wisdom shares with us, when we are faced with a difficult task, we take baby steps toward the end goal. This Life Skill is especially important this time of year when we are presented with our local and state assessments. If students take the necessary baby steps within their classrooms and daily lives by actively participating in their learning, then achievement will be the end result! Below I have shared a quick TedEd video on three ways to boost self confidence, check it out with your child!

We have many activities/opportunities coming up over the next few months. I invite you and your family to pick something to participate in together. PTO will offer an open swim opportunity at Penn High School on January 31 and a bowling night at Strikes and Spares on February 22.. They also have calendared an evening at Skyzone in March! The staff at Elsie Rogers is preparing for their Learning Sphere evening (February 27) where several new vendors have been slated and if the cold weather holds, the staff will be taking students snow tubing on February 14. Please check the calendar of dates below for days and times.

Finally, our spring months will look different in regards to our state assessments for students in grades 3-5. Please see the article below on updates and what parents need to know!

I wish you all a Happy New Year. May you all find happiness and health in 2019!

State Assessment Information, Grades 3-5

Children in grades 3-5 will participate in the yearly state assessment beginning in April. ILEARN will replace ISTEP. The Indiana Department of Education will open the ILEARN testing window on Monday, April 22. Testing will take place thru May 17. If you have a child in grade 3, IREAD3 will be administered March 18 - March 22. Please make every effort to have your child in school during this time. Though we do not wish to cause any unwanted stress on your child during this experience, we do want children to be cognizant of the fact these are very important tests. Teachers have begun working with students on sample questions and the test format so they are familiar with what they will see. That being said, the state department has also made information available to families. PLEASE consider checking out the following links below.
Big picture

  • Please make sure your child is in school during testing. Please DO NOT plan any appointments during testing or bring your child in late on these days. Testing rooms cannot be interrupted once the test begins. If your child does come in late, he/she will be asked to sit in the office until testing is completed.
  • Make sure your child gets a good night sleep before a test, and make sure your child eats properly the day of a test.
  • Try to maintain a pleasant home environment and avoid unnecessary conflicts.
  • Make sure your child has taken any needed medication.
  • Remind your child to listen carefully to the instructions from the teacher and to read the directions and each question carefully.
  • Wish your child good luck each morning of the test. Tell your child that he/she is special and that you believe in him/her! Encourage a "Just Don't Quit" mindset!
