CAFE Updates
December 2017
Academics
The students have started their first book club in 5th grade. Each time the students meet in their book clubs, they need to have: at least 8 think marks, a thick question, and a write long complete (WL is due 2 days after meeting). The students have 3 more meetings in their book clubs. Please check in with your child to see how their work is coming along. We will continue to work on our deeper level thinking skills through our book clubs: inferring, connecting, synthesizing, predicting, analyzing, and critiquing while we read our book club and "just right" books.
Writer's Workshop
The students will be digging deep into opinion essays. Their first essay they shared their opinion about whether or not chocolate milk should be served in schools. Ask them to share their draft with you! For the next couple weeks before Winter Break, the students will be completing another opinion essay.
Math
Our fraction unit is off to a great start. We are comparing/ordering and learning about equivalent fractions and percents. Soon the students will be learning how to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers. Once they have a good grasp on adding and subtracting, we will multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers. Don't forget to ask your child how their math goals are coming and check out their PLP for unit 4.
Social Studies
We are sailing off to the New World! The students are participating in a simulation where they are colonists. Once our ships land in the New World, we will be learning about the hardships of colonizing. The students will be writing journals in the voice of a colonist about our activities.
