Music Notes with Mrs. Brown

Late October, 2013

Fifth Graders Compose & Perform Melodies on Recorder

Fifth grade students spent the past few weeks further building their music literacy with reading notation and performing melodies on recorder. Students worked in groups to compose and perform their own recorder melodies. Groups chose to compose with few notes or many notes based on note reading skills.

Fifth Graders Attend UVA Orchestra Concert

Jazzing Up the Orchestra!

Fifth graders traveled to UVA's Old Cabell Hall to attend the annual "Young People's Concert" sponsored by the Charlottesville and University Symphony Orchestra. This year's concert theme was "Jazzing Up the Orchestra." The orchestra performed jazz selections by Gershwin, Joplin, Stravinsky, Ellingtion, Still, and a world premiere selection by local musician and composer John D'earth.

First Graders Perform an American Folk Dance: Leila

Students performed the American folk dance Leila with partners during music class. We discussed the early Appalachian string instrument: dulcimer. Students also listened and identified two contrasting sections in the music. We labeled the beginning section as A and the ending section as B. Students identified clapping movements in the A section as rhythm: a group of long & short sounds. We labeled marching elbow partner turns in the B section as steady beat: a slow steady pulse with no stops. Students were able to work with various partners during this folk dance to further build their social skills.

A Message from Mrs. Brown: We Will Have a Long Term Music Substitute

I will be taking some time off in the coming weeks to have corrective foot surgery. I have a condition known as plantar fasciitis, which causes pain when walking or standing. The recovery time for this procedure is 6 weeks. Therefore, our students will have a long-term sub for music class from Friday, November 15 to Friday, December 20, 2013.
Please know that Mrs. Crummie and I are working hard to find a wonderful sub for music during this time. We want this transition to be as smooth as possible for our students and staff. I will be collaborating and planning with our long-term sub to ensure that we meet the instructional needs of our students in music. Due to my time away, we have made some changes to concert dates and music club dates. Please note these changes below:

Music Club: We will continue to have fourth & fifth grade music club every Tuesday until the end of January instead of ending in December. The last day of music club will now be Tuesday January 28, 2014. Music club students will perform at our Winter Program on January 28, 2014 for the 9am show time only.

Second & Third Grade Winter Program: Instead of performing on Thursday 12/19, our program will be Tuesday, January 28, 2014 with show times at 9am and 7pm. Our inclement weather make-up date is Thursday, January 30th with the same show times.

I hope to be back at school on Monday, January 6, 2014 to start the New Year with feet that are fully functional. Please don’t hesitate to email me with any questions you may have regarding these changes.
