Salivary Glands
Part of the paramyxovirus family, Mumps is a contagious virus that causes the salivary glands to swell up. Salivary or parotid glands are located inside your cheeks, floor of your mouth and under your tongue. The salivary glands are responsible for your saliva production, digestion of food, swallowing and protecting your teeth from bacteria.
Symptoms and Signs
Some symptoms of mumps include:
- Headache
- Nausea
- Dryness in Mouth
- Fever
- Trouble/Pain when swallowing
- Swollen on side of face
Diagnostics
It's easier for children to be infected with Mumps. Ways to get Mumps are through someone who has the virus that sneezes or coughs, kissing, sharing dishes and food, and other physical contact. Mumps are usually recognized by the symptoms , especially the facial appearances. When infected with the Mumps a individual's face appears to be swollen and "hamster-like".
Vaccines, Treatments & Precautions
Vaccines for Mumps are given through a shot called MMR. Antibiotics do not cure Mumps virus, but only relieve symptoms. Getting the MMR shot and staying germ free is a precaution to take to prevent Mumps.
