Western Hills Magnet Center - February 18, 2020
Principal's Message
February is a flying by as students are gearing up for district and state assessments. All classes are continuing to work on grade level standards in all curricular areas as we close out our third quarter of the 2019-2020 school year. We ask for your help in making sure students are ready for learning by being on time and well-rested each and every day! Thank you for your support!
Third Quarter Conferences are right around the corner, March 4th & 5th, 2020. At these conferences, teachers will share grading and assessment reports along with information about summer school. Conference reminders were sent home last week, please note the day and time on the confirmation notice. If that day/time is no longer convenient, please call the teacher or the office to reschedule. Again, we need your participation at conferences!! We are striving for 100% attendance at Parent Teacher Conferences. Please note that there is no school for students on Thursday and Friday, March 5th & 6th due to conferences. Spring Break also begins on Monday, March 9th until Friday, March 13th.
At conferences, teachers will invite students to participate in an EXCITING summer extended learning opportunity at Western Hills Elementary. Our Summer Learning opportunity begins on June 1st and ends on June 26th, 2020. Our focus is on math and reading in Kdg – 5th grade. Registrations will be given out at conferences and need to be returned before March 30th. If you have any questions, please contact the Western Hills office, 531-299-2240.

Meet Mrs. Goeman - Speech - Language Pathologist
Meet Mrs. Deborah Goeman! Mrs. Goeman has been teaching for 26 years, all of which have been at Western Hills! She states her favorite thing at Western Hills are the students and staff! Mrs. Goeman grew up in Grand Island, NE., and attended Dodge Elementary in Grand Island until second grade. Her family then moved to Urbandale, IA., where she completed the remainder of her elementary and middle school years at St. Pius X. Mrs. Goeman said her favorite memory of that time was “in kindergarten when she counted from 1-100 and recited and wrote the alphabet with upper and lower case letters." Her favorite subjects were Math and English
Mrs. Goeman decided to become a speech – language pathologist in her sophomore year of college. After teaching for 26 years, Mrs. Goeman feels her teaching superpower is the ability to adjust her teaching to the unique needs of each of her students. Outside of school Mrs. Goeman likes to spend time were her family, garden and travel.
All School Chorus Event
The Omaha Public School’s All-City Music Festival series has been presented nearly without interruptions since 1949 and is reputed to be the oldest continuous running festival of its kind in the country. The 71st annual festival was held on February 8-9, 2020 at the prestigious Holland Performing Arts Center. The event included students from 7 high schools, 12 middle schools, and 63 elementary schools. From elementary, a limited number of 6th grade chorus students are chosen based on their work ethic as well as performance skills. They performed 3 pieces of choral repertoire with a combined group of over 300 6th grade singers. Congratulations to our 6th grade Chorus members who participated in this great event: Rihanna Walker, Tessa Fershee, DingDing Lul, and Sophia Savoiel!
