Dance Marathon
Long before Iowa football fans began waving, or Carson King showed the world a better way to spend its spare money, Franklin Middle School students were giving their all to support kids with cancer. Our past thirteen dances have combined to raise over $70,000! Encourage your student to get involved and “Be the Light!” this year, as we have many ways for them to get involved listed below!
Why do we do this? It started years ago with some pen pal letters to a sick child and ballooned into a mini dance marathon. Unbeknownst to us our first year, we had a cancer survivor within our student body, who knew all too well the many dark days associated with cancer. Even harder to believe is the fact Franklin has had a cancer survivor or current cancer patient walking the halls every year since! So we continue to fight for our fellow students and for all the children being treated for life threatening illnesses at the University of Iowa. The funds we raise provide for summer camps, an annual Adventureland trip, crafts and activities at the hospital, improved facilities, wigs, holiday gifts, some family assistance and more!
Franklin’s fourteenth dance marathon will be held in the lower gym on Friday, December 6th from 1:30-3:30 P.M. It is open to ALL Franklin students and admission is just $5.00. This event is affiliated with the University of Iowa’s Dance Marathon and the Children’s Miracle Network. Funds raised help support pediatric cancer patients at the University of Iowa’s Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
This is a great opportunity to get your student to earn some extra dollars for a very good cause while completing some extra chores around the house for you!
Money Mash
The game begins Thanksgiving week on Monday, November 25th. It will continue through Tuesday, November 26th and December 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Grade level winners will be announced on Thursday, December 5th.
Bake Sales
Three bake sales will be held after school in the concession area near the gym. We will have a friendly competition this year to see which grade level donates the most for our sales! In addition to baked goods, 12 packs of pop, or

Bolt Closet
We had a very successful first year of opening the Franklin Bolt Closet. For families new to Franklin, this closet provides new and gently used clothing, new socks and underwear and all personal hygiene care items for the underserved students who are part of the Franklin family. We protect the students’ privacy by only having the counseling and health center staff know who utilizes the closet. Monthly we will feature one item the closet is in need of.
For October/November, we are now accepting winter items such as new/lightly used hooded sweatshirts, stocking hats, gloves.
We also accept monetary donations and have volunteer shoppers for the Bolt Closet. Thank you for your support and helping to ensure every student comes to school clean, appropriately dressed and ready to learn!
