This Week@Riverside-Friday Edition
Home of the Rams!
Hello Riverside,
A few things to share (below) concerning our continuing Learning Opportunities, New Learning, and 3rd Quarter close out. I highly suggest students, parents, and staff read carefully the LCPS Continuity of Education Plan https://www.lcps.org/Page/228181
This plan could evolve as we continue to chart new territory in our new learning environment.
There may be more information shared tonight or this weekend by the county. If any of the situations change, I'll send out a summary.

Things to remember:
1. While we post our assignments on the A/B day schedule...the learning/the doing of the work is asynchronous---students may do the work when they can...either that day or another day. We suggest following along in order and doing the work daily, but that is dependent on what is happening at home and when they can access.
Students will have up to 150 minutes of learning they can do weekly per class.
*Why are we posting assignments according the A/B day schedule if assignments are asynchronous?
Two reasons...1-we don't want to overwhelm our students as we start this learning journey and 2-We are attempting to give both students and staff an experience they have experience with. Staff have been planning (since late 1990's--at least for those of us who are veteran educators, new teachers have probably never used another schedule ) and students (students have been learning using this schedule since grade 6) learning in this system for a long time.

Quarter 3 Work / Grading
Please be in contact with your teacher(s) concerning Q3 work. Teachers will work with you on missing assignments (that were done before March 11).
Final Grades
March 11, 2020 was the effective last day of school due to LCPS closure of schools on March 12 and 13, and Governor Northam’s subsequent order to close schools for the remainder of the year. VDOE has provided guidance to school divisions on awarding credits toward graduation and continuity of learning for all students during the extended school closure.
VDOE has also stated that awarding of grades and determining grade point average (GPA) is a local decision. LCPS has considered multiple factors and is focused on equitable practices in determining students’ final grades for the 2019-2020 school year.
The final grade for the course will be determined by the process below that results in the most favorable number grade for the student:
Option 1
Student receives a numeric grade based on the following calculation: The average of the Q1, Q2, and Q3
GPA is calculated using this final grade.
Option 2
Student receives a numeric grade based on the following calculation: The average of S1 and Q3
GPA is calculated using this final grade.
Option 3
Student receives a Semester 1 grade and a Pass or Fail for Quarter 3 and Final Grade.
GPA is calculated using Semester 1 grade.
Resulting grades will be shared with families and students.
At that time the option for the numeric grade or Pass/Fail will be given to the student and family.
If a parent/guardian does not provide input, if the student’s final grade in a course is detrimental to the student’s GPA, the grade will be Pass/Fail. If the student’s final grade enhances the student’s GPA, the letter grade and resulting GPA will be maintained on the student’s transcript.
Details regarding the timeline for determining final grades and electing a pass/fail option will be shared at a future date.

New Learning & Edmentum
Our teachers will begin posting learning opportunities that contain NEW material beginning on April 15.
Are these new material learning opportunities graded? No as far as "counting" as a grade, yes as far as in addition to any feedback on the assignment, you may receive a numeric number to indicate how you performed if it were a "grade."
Are these new learning opportunities what I would have learned in the 4th Quarter this year? Yes, they are designed for you to learn the rest of this years curriculum and set you on a good path for next year.
