    Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week takes place each year from October 23 through 31st. Schools, civic organizations, and other businesses across the nation team up to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention and healthy lifestyles.

Red Ribbon Week began as a movement to remember a Drug Enforcement Administration agent named Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, who dedicated his life to battling illegal drugs and protecting our children from the negative effects of substance abuse.

To celebrate healthy choices, we will be having two dress-up days in honor of Red Ribbon Week: Wednesday will be Wear Red Day. Friday will be pajama day.

Research shows that when parents talk to their children about illegal and unhealthy drug use, children are better equipped to make healthy choices and keep themselves safe. Click HERE for pointers on how to talk to your child about drugs (available in English and Spanish).

NEW - Magazines available on SORA!

Most weeks, we have been reinforcing the importance of reading at home. This week, we are excited to share new resources to use for independent reading at home!

There are now 20 magazine titles available in Sora for our elementary students! These include National Geographic Kids, National Geographic Little Kids, Time for Kids Family, Astronomy for Kids, ChopChop Magazine, Minecraft World, and many more.

SORA is available from students' iPad or Chromebook by logging in to Clever and then clicking on Sora Digital Library.

Mark your calendar for Picture Day!

Picture day is Wednesday, November 10th! This year, we are partnering with a local company, Verissimo Photography. Packages start at $12. Envelopes will be going home soon. Completed orders must be brought to the photographer on picture day (do not return to teachers) OR packages may be prepaid online. More information coming soon!

    Parent-Teacher Conferences

Each school year, at the end of the first trimester, teachers meet with the families of every student. The purpose of these meetings is to strengthen the partnership between school and home and to inform parents regarding their child's academic progress. Teachers will discuss current proficiencies, growth, and other factors influencing learning. We want to ensure that every child is prepared for a successful future in school and beyond. These conferences are an important part of that work.

Conferences will be help between November 10th and 19th. Like last year, conferences this year will be held via Zoom. Please keep your eye out for a conference invitation from your child's teacher and respond at your earliest convenience. Invitations will go out the first week of November. Your child's teacher looks forward to meeting with you!

    Annual Scholastic Book Fair

Each year (except last year!), GLC has organized a Scholastic Book Fair to come to the school during the week of parent-teacher conferences. This year, the Scholastic Book Fair will be held in the GLC library and is scheduled to run from Monday (11/15) to Friday (11/19).

Purchasing books and other items from our Book Fair is a great way to support our school, and get ahead on presents for the winter holidays. Our school earns free books based on how much we sell at our Book Fair!

Family members WILL be allowed to come on campus to purchase books and other items. In addition, we will have a contactless, safe way to provide your child with funds that they can use to purchase items during the school day. More information about the schedule and e-wallet solution will be coming soon!

    Homework Help!

Beginning October 18, 2021, Visalia Unified School District's After-hours Academic Assistance (AAA) will provide after-hours academic support through a virtual platform. This program is available to all VUSD students grades K-12 at no charge, four evenings a week. Homework assistance will be lead by certificated VUSD teachers in all grades and mostly all subjects. The AAA program helps students with homework from content previously covered in class. For more information and to access the tutoring Zoom links, visit:
