Te Karere a te Tumuaki - Principal's Message
Tēnā koutou katoa (hello everyone). Today's newsletter comes to from my home where I have been hold up in bed for the last 2 days with a nasty bug that many of our tamariki have had lately too - I can sympathise with them as it certainly knocks you for six. Thanks to everyone who has covered for me at school and to those of you who are patiently waiting for me to reply to emails.
We have seen awesome achievements at the Wairarapa cross country, our seniors have been presenting their speeches and the juniors have been visiting Aratoi - all wonderful things to see happening.
Please RSVP below if you can come to our planting day on the 4th of July. We need help with clearing areas, taking down fences and planting so bring along chainsaws, diggers, weed-eaters and wheelbarrows. As part of the orchard project we are going to be building a berry house so any handy-people builder types are very welcome! Chris Black and I had a lovely time at Garden Barn on Tuesday purchasing trees for the orchard, and Mel Macdougall has kindly got our natives ordered.
I am looking forward to catching up with everyone on Monday.

Planting Day - Sunday 4th July
It would be fantastic to have as many of you as possible helping out at our upcoming planting day. We have recently received grants from the 'Ruamahanga Restoration Project', 'Countdown Supermarket' and the Greater Wellington Regional Council. A total of $5,000 worth of plants are due to be put in the ground so it's all hands on deck. We have also ordered some high quality weed matting.
Please bring along any and al of the following items to use if you can: weed eaters; spades; wheel barrows; rakes. If anyone has a little digger to scrape away grass/top soil for some pathways in the orchard area too, that would be amazing. FoGS is sorting lunch for everyone - please RSVP below if you think you can make it.

FoGS Monday School Lunch Roster
Thanks to everyone who is able to help out with our Monday school lunches. Please see this terms roster on the left. FoGS is a lovely bunch of dedicated parents who are looking for new recruits to help organise events throughout the year. Please feel welcome and encouraged to come along to our next meeting and get involved.
Chitty, Chitty Bang Bang.
Check out current and former students who are in Masterton Theatre Company’s production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang that is opening next Thursday night (24th). It is shaping up to be a brilliant show. Ruby has a lead role playing Jemima Potts, Katelin and Olivia both have speaking parts and Aiden, Olivia and Katelin are in the child’s ensemble.
Health & PE Curriculum Review
We are currently working through a review of the health and pe curriculum. A draft overview was presented at the BoT meeting in March. Work taking place now is around EOTC. We are looking to redesign how our camps are rolled out as follows:
- Y1/2: Annual Tent City, overnight stay at school.
- Y3/4: Annual camp swapping between Waimanaaki (Riversdale Beach) and Kaitoke, 2 nights.
- Y5/6: Annual camp at a location somewhere in the bottom half of the North Island, 3 nights.
- Y7/8: Annual camp at a national location with every even year being held at Abel Tasman National Park. The odd year is to be decided co-jointly by the students and their teachers. 4-5 nights.
We are going to combine our Year 3 and 4 students for an end of year camp to help the Year 3’s transition into Ruamahanga at the start of the following year. Splitting the Year 4’s off also allows for a more challenging camp to be provided for our Year 5 & 6 students. This organisation also allows for an even step up or increase to the number of nights students are away for as they move through the school.
