Ravenwood Elementary
March 2020
Home of the Ravens
Ravenwood embodies community and thrives from the interconnected support system of Eagle River. Outdoor education, the arts, and the use of technology are all integrated into the academic experiences students are offered to optimize engagement, creativity, and independent learning.
Ahoy Ravenwood Families –
I trust you are all looking forward to Spring Break. It's hard to believe that when we return on March 16, we will begin our fourth and final quarter of the 19-20 school year.
PEAKS testing for all of Anchorage School District 3rd – 6th graders is rapidly approaching, and we hope you will help us to have all students here on time on these dates, ready to do their very best on this statewide standards based assessment. Our testing window is shorter than in years past, which makes make-ups due to student absences more challenging. Thank you for your help avoiding absences (doctor, dental appointments) during our testing window.
Ravenwood’s testing schedule will be:
3rd grade - Mar. 31 and Apr. 1
4th grade - Mar. 30, 31, and Apr. 1
5th and 6th grade – Apr. 2 and 3
Please take a few minutes to review our newsletter and see some of the fun events that have occurred and ones that are coming up in the near future here at Ravenwood.
Never hesitate to contact me if you have questions or concerns. I hope to see you tonight at the Science Fair/STEAM Night.
Joyfully,
Kim Bautista

S-P-E-L-L-I-N-G BEE
It was another awesome Spelling Bee, as our participants took turns spelling a wide variety of words to get down to our two finalists, Landyhn Patel (champion) and Peyton Johnston (1st Runner-up). Landyhn will represent our school at the State Spelling Bee. Thank you to Mrs. Sam and Ms. Bentson, the leaders and coaches, for this year’s event. Mrs. Hunter, retired Ravenwood teacher, was our special guest Pronouncer.
STEAM Night/Science Fair - - Wednesday, Mar. 4th: Celebrate the amazing scientific thinking of our students on display from 6-7:30pm. Student science displays are in the MPR, our Student Tech team will showcase some of the technology students have been using in the STEM Lab with Mr. Johnson, and around the school there will be a wide variety of interactive displays to further engage you! Don’t miss this year’s STEAM/Science Fair!

2020 PEAKS State Assessment
Test your best! Reach new PEAKS of learning!
Each spring, Alaskan students are provided an opportunity to show what they know. When students show what they know, teachers and parents can partner to promote student success.
The Performance Evaluation for Alaska’s Schools (PEAKS) is Alaska’s summative assessment administered to students in Grades 3-9 (English language arts and mathematics) and grades 4, 8 and 10 (science) each spring. The purpose of a large-scale, summative assessment is to provide parents and schools an overall picture of a student’s progress in meeting the Alaska standards at his/her grade level. The assessment is taken on the computer and is not timed, but each content area takes approximately 100-180 minutes.
Parents can locate resources for the PEAKS assessment, including directions for PEAKS Practice tests, called Online Tools Training and PEAKS Tutorials on the ASD website at www.asdk12.org/PEAKS.
Parents can also help by ensuring their children are well rested, eat a nutritious breakfast, and are at school on time for the days of testing. Please avoid scheduling appointments on your child’s testing days.
The ASD PEAKS testing window below allows for school assessment scheduling flexibility. Students! Get ready to reach new peaks of learning and earn a PEAKS sticker set for showing what you know during our school’s PEAKS testing dates: March 30-April 3, 2020.
Read Across America Week
This week is Read Across America as we celebrate the love of reading! Each day has a different spirit day dress-up theme, with a favorite book character parade on Thursday at 10:30am. There is a trivia question students can answer for a chance to win prizes for their correct answers. Friend our school Facebook page (Ravenwood Elementary) to see pictures from the parade.

PTSO SPONSOR A SNOW SAW
Sponsor a Snow Saw and help our Physical Education Program! The winter months in Alaska provide a snowy winter wonderland that we love to help our students explore and enjoy! We are looking to purchase a set of 65 snow saws that we recently borrowed from another school. Each saw, including shipping is $25. PTSO will use 100% of funds beyond the 65 saws for other PE and recess equipment. So, sponsor a saw, knowing your donation stays and supports Ravenwood Physical Education.
Keep scanning or sending in those BoxTops and dimes! Every little bit helps our school community!
