Ravenwood Elementary

March 2020

Home of the Ravens

Ravenwood embodies community and thrives from the interconnected support system of Eagle River. Outdoor education, the arts, and the use of technology are all integrated into the academic experiences students are offered to optimize engagement, creativity, and independent learning.

Ahoy Ravenwood Families –

I trust you are all looking forward to Spring Break. It's hard to believe that when we return on March 16, we will begin our fourth and final quarter of the 19-20 school year.

PEAKS testing for all of Anchorage School District 3rd – 6th graders is rapidly approaching, and we hope you will help us to have all students here on time on these dates, ready to do their very best on this statewide standards based assessment. Our testing window is shorter than in years past, which makes make-ups due to student absences more challenging. Thank you for your help avoiding absences (doctor, dental appointments) during our testing window.

Ravenwood’s testing schedule will be:

3rd grade - Mar. 31 and Apr. 1

4th grade - Mar. 30, 31, and Apr. 1

5th and 6th grade – Apr. 2 and 3

Please take a few minutes to review our newsletter and see some of the fun events that have occurred and ones that are coming up in the near future here at Ravenwood.

Never hesitate to contact me if you have questions or concerns. I hope to see you tonight at the Science Fair/STEAM Night.

It was another awesome Spelling Bee, as our participants took turns spelling a wide variety of words to get down to our two finalists, Landyhn Patel (champion) and Peyton Johnston (1st Runner-up). Landyhn will represent our school at the State Spelling Bee. Thank you to Mrs. Sam and Ms. Bentson, the leaders and coaches, for this year’s event. Mrs. Hunter, retired Ravenwood teacher, was our special guest Pronouncer.

2020 PEAKS State Assessment

Test your best! Reach new PEAKS of learning!

Each spring, Alaskan students are provided an opportunity to show what they know. When students show what they know, teachers and parents can partner to promote student success.

The Performance Evaluation for Alaska’s Schools (PEAKS) is Alaska’s summative assessment administered to students in Grades 3-9 (English language arts and mathematics) and grades 4, 8 and 10 (science) each spring. The purpose of a large-scale, summative assessment is to provide parents and schools an overall picture of a student’s progress in meeting the Alaska standards at his/her grade level. The assessment is taken on the computer and is not timed, but each content area takes approximately 100-180 minutes.

Parents can locate resources for the PEAKS assessment, including directions for PEAKS Practice tests, called Online Tools Training and PEAKS Tutorials on the ASD website at www.asdk12.org/PEAKS.

Parents can also help by ensuring their children are well rested, eat a nutritious breakfast, and are at school on time for the days of testing. Please avoid scheduling appointments on your child’s testing days.

The ASD PEAKS testing window below allows for school assessment scheduling flexibility. Students! Get ready to reach new peaks of learning and earn a PEAKS sticker set for showing what you know during our school’s PEAKS testing dates: March 30-April 3, 2020.

Read Across America Week

Big picture

This week is Read Across America as we celebrate the love of reading! Each day has a different spirit day dress-up theme, with a favorite book character parade on Thursday at 10:30am. There is a trivia question students can answer for a chance to win prizes for their correct answers. Friend our school Facebook page (Ravenwood Elementary) to see pictures from the parade.

STUDENT COUNCIL’S LATEST SERVICE PROJECT - - CHAINS OF CARING was a success thanks to all the students who bought a link to add to the Chain of Caring to raise money for the Children’s Hospital at Providence. Mrs. Bentson took some 6th grade representatives to a special reception at the hospital last week where they presented 5-foot of our school chain and the money raised by our students this year. Our chain section will be added to other school chains as part of a caring hallway display, and the money is used to purchase comfort items for the patients.

“For thousands of years and countless generations, survival for Alaska Native people depended not only on individual strength, skill and knowledge, but also on the ability to work together toward common goals.” This year, our school coaches, Ms. Nielsen (PE teacher), Mrs. Jerome (PE Teacher), Mrs. Colgrove (2nd grade teacher), Mrs. Mason (parent volunteer), Mr. Green (parent volunteer), Mr. Kruzel (parent volunteer), and two Ravenwood alum, Caris Pemberton and Iris Jones, prepared 70 students to participate in a community Junior Native Youth Olympics (JNYO) in February, with 45 of them qualifying to compete at the state JNYO the weekend of Feb. 14-16. All of our students showed outstanding sportsmanship, and three of them medaled! For more information about the individual events – go to https://citci.org/partnerships-events/nyo-games/competitive-events/

Student Nutrition

Just a friendly reminder families, the Anchorage School District School Board Policy 5040, states "all foods available during the school day shall be offered to students with consideration for promoting student health and reducing childhood obesity." It also states, "all foods and beverages made available on school campus (including, but not limited to vending, franchise vendors, concessions, a la carte, student stores, classroom parties, fundraising, and foods and beverages that are not for sale) during the school day, between the hours of 12:00 AM and 30 minutes after the conclusion of the instructional day, shall meet nutritional requirements of the National School Lunch Act, Nutrition Standards for All Foods Sold in Schools also known as Smart Snacks in School."

Please consider healthy options when sending in food items to the classroom. A list of suggested snack choices to consider is available on our website under the Family tab.

Sponsor a Snow Saw and help our Physical Education Program! The winter months in Alaska provide a snowy winter wonderland that we love to help our students explore and enjoy! We are looking to purchase a set of 65 snow saws that we recently borrowed from another school. Each saw, including shipping is $25. PTSO will use 100% of funds beyond the 65 saws for other PE and recess equipment. So, sponsor a saw, knowing your donation stays and supports Ravenwood Physical Education.

Keep scanning or sending in those BoxTops and dimes! Every little bit helps our school community!

Iditarod Bundzten Burners team visited Ravenwood explaining how the dogs are selected and trained for mushing. Students enjoyed the dog sled demonstration, asking the mushers questions, and a group sing-along. Thank you Matt Paveglio and Josh Shumen (aka "the Mushing Mermaid")!
