2022 VETERANS DAY CELEBRATION
The Veterans Day Celebration at Gunter ISD is not "just another assembly". We take pride in reminding our students of the sacrifices our veterans have made (or are making) to keep our country safe and protect our freedoms. We enjoyed musical selections from the 3rd grade and the GHS/GMS Band and Choir. A medley of the Branches of the Armed Services anthems was played one by one as the military members stood while their anthem played (a favorite tradition for many at this ceremony) and each Veteran was mentioned during the Call of Service. I think the title of the 3rd Grade musical performance, "We Honor You" sums up our ceremony the best! Thank you, Veterans, for coming to our school and letting us honor YOU!
See individual full length videos of these special moments:

Lady Tigers Basketball - Serving Others π
The ladies spent some time during their Thanksgiving break serving those in need at the Dallas Life Shelter. Their hearts, work ethic, and sincerity was truly awesome. Thank you, Coach Sarten, for teaching valuable lessons on and off the court.
π₯£ Maddi's Fridge Food Drive & LovePacs π
After reading the book, Maddie's Fridge, the 1st grade class learned about giving through their Maddi's Fridge Food Drive. They worked hard at collecting cans, and even made a plea for donations via the news!
After collecting the food, the group got together to decorate and fill the boxes with food (and love). The "LovePacs" were distributed to people in need, and we are sure they loved the food and the decorated boxes. Thank you to everyone who sent in food to help make our 1st grade service project a success.
Now... here's the "rest of the story"...
Once they finished the project, the 1st graders had a small celebration to acknowledge their success. The book, Maddi's Fridge, had a part about Cheesy Pizza Bombs. When Mrs. Martindale talked to North Side Pie owner, Christina Zielinski, about the possibility making some for our first graders to celebrate the work they did on collecting and boxing up food, she was excited and jumped right in to figure out how to make the yummy treats! North Side Pie made about 300 Cheesy Pizza Bombs and DONATED them to our first graders. Thank you so much, North Side Pie, for always supporting our Tigers!
If you happen to see "Cheesy Pizza Bombs" on their menu in the future, you can thank a 1st grader for providing the inspiration!
DON'T FORGET THAT DECEMBER 16TH IS AN EARLY RELEASE DAY
Gunter ISD will be closed for the Winter Holidays December 17th -January 3rd
(Basketball will still have games. Check the calendar and go watch some hoops!)

Gunter Elementary Thanksgiving Day Parade!
We are sure many of you enjoyed the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade this past Thursday! But, do YOU know the history behind it? Our second graders do :)
Second graders at GES learned the history behind the Thanksgiving Macy's Day parade before they left for the holiday. After learning the history, they each created a parade balloon and showed them off around the school in their very own parade!
Kindergarten Thanksgiving
With the help of great parents, Kindergarten enjoyed a fabulous Thanksgiving feast which somewhat resembled what they might have eaten on the first Thanksgiving.
The Ever Changing Earth
Third graders spent some time learning about rapid changes to the earth caused by landslides, earthquakes, and volcanoes. They performed mini experiments to demonstrate those rapid changes and discuss how they impact the earth. The curiosity and concentration seen in the photos shows the "re-enactments" were very thought provoking!
It's as Simple as A, BEE, C...
Thank you Gunter Ladies for Tomorrow for providing our GES students with an unβbeeβlievable learning experience!
GLFT brought in Beekeeper, Jarratt Calvert from Shades of Green in Celina, Texas to educate us on the importance of bees to the ecosystem. Mr. Calvert shared with students how bees make honey and the important tools he uses to gather honey from his bee hives. GES students enjoyed a bee suit relay race where they interacted with a bee suit, beehive brush, beehive J-hook and smoker.
The assembly concluded with GLFT giving every student a bee coloring page and box of crayons. Thank you again Gunter Ladies for Tomorrow and Jarratt Calvert for providing us a program that truly was βThe Beeβs Kneesβ!
Toys Come to Life at GES
The Gunter Elementary School kids were greeted by some friends during an afternoon car line at the beginning of November. City employees along with the Gunter Police Department and the Gunter ISD Police Department Officers were dressed in Toy Story costumes to make our littlest Tigers smile.
It was a huge success! Thank you for everything you do for our schools.
Pre-K Life Lessons
Pre-K has been having a great time learning how to be kind, stay safe, be healthy and learning what is real and not real. During this unit they have completed the following activities:
- Made "bird donuts" to make sure birds have food to eat in this cold weather.
- "Shopped" in our Pre-K grocery store and made healthy food choices for nutrition week.
- Made some very healthy "Stone Soup".
- Learning what is living and non-living.
GMS NOVEMBER STUDENTS OF THE MONTH
Nolyn Briggs - 5th Grade
Nolyn is a 5th grade Tiger who participates in basketball, football and baseball. His favorite subject is math, which will come in handy in all aspects of his life! He enjoys "gaming" on his computer and playing with his friends. His favorite musician is Morgan Whalen and aspires to become a professional athlete.
Angie Mendoza - 6th Grade
Angie is a 6th grader who is involved in volleyball and basketball. She loves math, which will serve her well all the way through life! She loves to play outside and aspires to become a college volleyball player.
Jett Martin - 7th Grade
Jett is a 7th grader who is involved in football and basketball. He loves his science classes, which will help him learn the "why's" of so many things! He is a "gamer" and loves to play outdoors. His favorite musician is Eminem and aspires to become an NFL player.
Hailey Hoel - 8th Grade
Hailey is involved in a variety of things including volleyball, basketball, tennis and band. She loves science which also carries over to her hobby of baking. Science is everywhere in life! She also enjoys using her craftiness in art. Hailey's favorite musician is Blake Shelton and wants to work with animals as a future career.
Congratulations to all of these students!
Empathy Through the Lens π·
Mrs. Clement's photography students learned about empathy using photos by Dorothea Lange that were taken during the Great Depression. Class discussions included all the things that happened that led to the depressionβ¦stock market crash, bank failures, drought, dust bowl and how so many people lost everything they had and were just trying to feed their families. Following the discussion, each student was given a different photo that Dorothea took with an explanation of that particular situation. They thought about what that personβs life was like and how they felt, as well as the things they experienced, and filled in the information beside their photo. This is definitely a learning experience that will make an impact on how students see others and how they can empathize with their situation.
Calculations on the Track
6th graders in Mrs. Morrison's class spent some time gathering data in order to practice calculating speed. They timed how long it took a marble to travel 50 cm and then calculated the average speed of the marble, and then they timed each other walking and running 20 meters and then calculated their average speed.
Athletics and Algebra
Mr. Scoggins' Honors Algebra 2 students headed to the basketball court for a lesson in "Projectile Motion". Students were instructed where to stand on the court and shoot baskets while their team member filmed them using Stopwatch app to calculate when the ball hit the rim or went in the basket. The data was used to "solve for x" and create a unique quadratic equation to explain the initial upward velocity. Yes! There is math in basketball!
Stored Energy... What can you do with it?
Students used their own "stored up energy" to create a catapult during Physics.
Mrs. Wallis tasked her students to create the device to teach them about projectile motion using tension, torsion and gravity.
Dia de los Muertos
Students in Mrs. Nichols' Spanish 2 class spent some time learning about the history and traditions of Dia de los Muertos which originated in Mexico but is celebrated around the world. Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a Mexican holiday where families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion that includes food, drink and celebration. Students created their own altarβs of their loved ones who have passed. Take a look at some of the creative alters that our students made to honor a loved one. Such an awesome tradition!
ROBOTICS - STATE BOUND
The Robotics team advanced to the BEST State Competition which will be held on December 2nd and 3rd. This year's team is made up of students in grades 8-12.
In Robotics, each team receives "the official box" of materials the second weekend of September. The challenge is never known until Kickoff Day, and then the race is on to have a competition robot ready in seven weeks. All competitors must follow these rules:
- The robot can only be built from the materials received in the "official box" and on the consumables list provided by the organization. Adding anything extra disqualifies the robot.
- The robot must also be built solely by the students.
- Mentors are there to help, but cannot build the robot.
While building and programming the robot, students must also create an engineering notebook which details all the work done on the robot throughout the season.
Our team began with brainstorming sessions, drawings, and trial and error engineering scenarios which made for some very long work days (7 days a week) getting the robot ready for competition.
The 2022 Challenge
The robot must place objects, called fulfillment boxes, in specific areas on the field and then manipulate another robot, called Squeaky, to knock items into the fulfillment boxes. This is a take on the assembly line. The team decided on the name, MiniUni, in honor of the Unimate β the first industrial robot used by a company (General Motors) on an assembly line.
The "How"
Several manipulators had to be created by our students and placed on the robot, including:
- Using a scotch yoke to place wheels on Squeaky. Wheels were loaded into a hopper and then pushed out using the scotch yoke.
- Using an arm placement lever which had to place an arm on Squeaky; this arm would be used to knock items into the fulfillment boxes.
- Placing a hook at one end of the robot to pull the fulfillment boxes to the proper area.
- Finally, a mechanism was needed to manipulate a control box, which in turn manipulates Squeaky. We used a horizontal arm with a claw at the end. The arm moved with a rack and pinon mechanism and the claw used a servo.
The control box has three levers. One moves Squeaky forward and backward; another moves Squeakyβs arm up and down; and the third rotates Squeaky. The team felt it would be best to manipulate one of the levers instead of all three, so the IR (InfaRed) option was used to reprogram the control box so that we could change what a lever does depending on what was needed. We were one of the few teams in our HUB to do this with success.
Game Day - Bonham, TX
It's important to point out that school size is not considered in BEST Robotics, Robot Only Competition. Even though Gunter was competing against schools ranging from Class 1A to 6A and they were the smallest team in the HUB, they came in 3rd Place in the Game Competition. Gunter also won the award for Best Engineer Drawings. The top 2 teams included: (THE) Texas Home Educators (1st Place) and Trenton (2nd Place).
Headed to STATE
Gunter advanced to State in the Game Only division by scoring more points than other teams in this division. Only two teams advance in this division; the other team going is Allen High School.
25 teams signed up for Game Day, 10 dropped out before the day even began because they did not complete their robot. Your Gunter Tigers never gave up and we wish them the best of luck on December 2nd and 3rd.
Members of the team include: Seniors: Gray McDowell β Software lead & driver, Jonathan Smith β CAD lead. Junior: Dominic Gugliotta β driver. Sophomores: Cristian Escalera β lead production engineer & driver, Maddox Waggoner β driver & production engineer, Zoe Ralston β notebook. Freshman: Angel Roman Hurd β pit boss & production engineer, Presley Pace β lead notebook & production engineer, Jackson Mazey β production engineer. Eighth grade: Samuel Waggoner and Tucker OβDaniel β junior production engineers.

GMS - One Act Play Preparedness!
GMS Theatre students are excited to welcome back UIL One Act Play competition to Gunter ISD! Our competition is coming up on Saturday, December 3rd at Princeton High School. Gunter will compete around 2pm. Admission is free.
We will be performing "The Girl In The White Pinafore" by Jiggs Burgess. The play is based on the true story of what remains the worst school disaster in our nation's history. On that fateful day in 1937, an undetected natural gas leak caused a brand-new school in New London, Texas to explode killing nearly 300 students and teachers. The events of that day lead to the passing of legislation requiring the odorization of natural gas.
Our cast and crew visited the site of the explosion and toured the New London museum yesterday and were able to make real connections to the story they have been working hard to tell. Today we were thrilled to have the playwright visit our classroom! What an amazing and immersive experience for our kids!
Monster Plushies
One of the cutest projects you will ever see! Pre-K students helped our Theatre Tech students design some monsters by drawing the perfect monster. The Theatre Tech students brought those designs to "life" by creating a stuffed "plushie" version of their drawing. Once they completed all of them, they delivered them to the elementary school, and the smiles tell the rest of the story :)
AG MECHANICS COMPETITION
The AG Mechanics Team competed at the United Ag and Turf Contest in Van Alstyne on November 5th and earned the title of Reserve Champions!

Graduation Date Change - Mark your calendar!
Graduation is a special time for our seniors, and we canβt think of a more special place to have the graduation than our own Tiger Field. To make that happen, we have decided to change the 2023 Graduation date to Thursday, May 25th at 8:00 PM. Making this change gives us the opportunity to make alternative plans in case the weather does not cooperate.
Our new plan looks like this:
- Graduation - Thursday, May 25th | 8:00 PM
- In the event of inclement weather on Thursday, Graduation will be held on Friday, May 26th at 9:00 AM
- If bad weather persists throughout both days, Graduation will be moved into the GHS Event Center (Main Gymnasium) and held Friday morning at 10:00 AM. If we have to move the ceremony inside, seating will be limited. Each graduate will be given 10 tickets for family/friends.
We are looking forward to making this event as special as we can for the Class of 2023.
