Message From Principal Engdall
Greetings Shaw Community,
We are ready! Are you?
By now, you have received and read the mitigation policies from our district. In this edition of See Shaw Shine, you will find a practical, everyday plan for our life on campus at Shaw Montessori. This plan was created around the district plan. Some items that have changed since last spring are:
Although not required, the use of masks while on campus is strongly recommended and encouraged.
We will be observing a distancing of 3 ft. in the classrooms.
We will not be doing temperature checks when children arrive on campus. Please make sure before dropping of your child that you have done the self-check as recommended by the mitigation plan.
We will be eating our meals outside for the time being just as we did in the spring. Our cafeteria will be the new space for our music classes in order to safely distance the children for this type of learning activity.
Art will be held in room 303 and 302. Ms. Ketchum will be teaching on the Smart Board through Google Meets for initial instruction then splitting her time between the two classrooms to support instruction. Our IA’s will be accompanying their students to art class to assist in the oversight. One art classroom is just too small for the size of some of our classes to safely distance.
PE will be held in the gym until the weather cools enough to be outside.
The playground equipment has reopened for student use and will be in a rotation for use by classrooms. Classrooms must still cohort while on the playground. Each classroom will have an opportunity to use the play structures at some point until we can safely re-open without cohorting.
Early release has returned to Wednesdays. Our 3 and 4 year olds will dismiss at 11:30. Kindregarten-8th grade will dismiss at 1:40.
Back to School Night will be held in person in your child’s classroom on Tuesday, August 3rd. Primary (3-6) will be held from 4-5, lower elementary (6-9) from 5-6, upper elementary (9-12) from 6-7 and middle school (12-14) from 4-5. After this, parents/guardians will not be allowed on campus except to pick up children from PEER Club.
We are planning to hold afterschool enrichment classes this semester. A list of class offerings will be available the last week of August.
See you soon,
Principal Engdall

Shaw PTA
I love the Olympics! I love them so much. Every two years, I become an absolute expert in all things Olympics. Fencing? Rhythmic Gymnastics, Synchronized Diving? I watch them all (although I am a bit upset that Dressage is a horse competition and not a competition where you dress up ponies in tiny outfits).
But I mainly watch swimming -- a sport where five-tenths of a second can mean the difference between a gold medal and an NBC sports reporter asking you how it feels to be just off the podium. (“Great, Nancy. It feels great being 4th at the Olympics. All the stress and none of the hardware.”)
If you listen to each of those swimmers talk to the reporters, 100% of the time they will in some shape or form say “I was just swimming my race”. “I had to stay focused and swim my race…” “I’m just focusing on swimming my race”
And I feel like that’s what we all need to do. We just need to swim our race this year. If we dive in at one end of the pool, swim our race, and get out, we’ve had a successful year.
Sometimes we will win gold. Sometimes we won’t even get to the finals. But if the Olympics have taught us anything this year, it’s that sometimes you can only do what you can do.
So while you are swimming your race this year, let the PTA know what we can do to make your race easier for you.
For instance, many parents couldn’t find their teacher’s school supply list, so we put them on the PTA website (shawmontessoripta.com) to make it easy to find.
Kids have been growing out of their clothes and we’ve all been too busy to go shopping, so the PTA is hosting a clothing swap. Even better, the clothing swap is right before Bingo Night so you don’t have to come down to the school twice.
Even Tasty Tuesday is there to make your life easier. One night a month, you don’t have to figure out what to make for dinner! (Ok, this month’s Tasty Tuesday is Creamistry, but who says you can’t have ice cream for dinner!?)
The Shaw community is here to help you swim your race. Feel free to let us know how we can help by emailing me at President@shawmontessoripta.com.
