The Crayon Initiative
More than a half-million pounds of crayons are discarded every year in the US. These crayons end up as waxy sludge that clogs our landfills. Stonegate Elementary is partnering with former student, Audrey Mast, and The Crayon Initiative by collecting our used, unwanted, or broken crayson. These crayons will be melted down, remanufactured, and distributed to hospitals. The Crayon Initiative donates these remanufactured crayons to local hospitals such as Peyton Manning Children's Hospital and Riley Hospital for Children. We encourage everyone at Stonegate Elementary to donate their used crayons in the collection boxes. The collection boxes will be placed in each grade level hallway by Wednesday, May 15th. For more information, visit thecrayoninitiative.org #ShareYourColors

Summer Garden Help
We are so excited to have our outdoor garden growing again this summer! In order to make sure it's in great condition when students return in the fall, we'd love to have some help with summer maintenance. Please sign up below if you would like to "adopt" our garden for a week over the summer. Responsibilities would including weeding the garden, watering the plants, trimming grass along the edge of the beds, and harvesting any produce that is ready to picked. (A hose and sprinkler are at the garden site.) Thanks for your help! Please contact Mrs. Skura (jenskura@zcs.k12.in.us) with any questions.

Media Center Information
It’s that time of year again! The SGE media center is taking inventory and preparing for the 2019-2020 school year. Please return all library books to the media center as soon as possible to avoid paying a replacement fee. Final overdue invoices were sent home with your student this week. If you have recently returned materials or paid a fine, please disregard the invoices.
To pay for replacement copies of lost materials, please see the highlighted amount on your overdue invoice and make a check payable to Stonegate Elementary School. The additional processing fee includes cataloging expenses. Please contact the media specialist, Mrs. Robling, at jrobling@zcs.k12.in.us if you have any questions. Thank you!

Math Pentathlon
ZCS was well represented at two area Math Pentathlon Saturday tournaments in April and May. Elementary students from ZCS have been preparing all year by learning five Math Pentathlon games. The child had fun, displayed great sportsmanship, and even brought home awards, medals, and t-shirts to celebrate their hard work and effort.
If interested in learning more about Math Pentathlon, visit the Eagle Rec course offerings. A four day summer course is offered for preschool - 3rd grade. We would love to grow our ZCS Math Pentathlon Team. Come see what it's all about! - Cathy Daugherty and Shannon Hall

ZCS Elementary Identification Guidelines for Students Who Show Need For Advanced Curriculum/Instruction
The Indiana Department of Education requires school districts to identify high ability (gifted) students and provide them with appropriately differentiated curriculum and instruction. In ZCS, we consider ability and achievement data of all students each spring to identify any who may need advanced instruction and/or curriculum. While the official designation is a state-required label for students, our school district is committed to continuous progress for all students, regardless of designation. Accelerated content is common in our classrooms as are heightened expectations and instructional levels and high-achieving peers. Instructional methods regularly group and regroup students with differentiated materials and goals. Our teachers are committed to regular assessment of skills and knowledge and matching experiences to challenge each child and help him or her make maximum academic growth. We are proud to be a high-performing school district with high expectations for all students.
For students currently in grades 1-3: All students are reviewed each year to determine if they need advanced curriculum and/or instruction. Our identification team looks at both achievement (NWEA) and ability (OLSAT). Since these vary from year to year with young students, we re-look at every student each spring. Parents will be notified by June 10 if their child has been recommended for differentiation based on the need for accelerated instruction or curriculum. If your child was not identified through our extensive process, parents may appeal the decision. Parents can complete the appeal process by June 15. Forms are located on the website: https://1.cdn.edl.io/STFd2znmUm9v64tOK0o5GHa56Sylujl5JYhwFChIXdtXGo0P.pdf
For students currently in grades 4-7: At this level students are more formally identified for accelerated instruction or curriculum. All students are considered for accelerated classes each year. Our identification team considers either achievement (NWEA) or ability (OLSAT) when making decisions.

The minimal changes made to the requirements are directly related to the software needed to run ILEARN testing and the ability to access our encrypted network for safety. CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR VISITORS
During the school day, all visitors must enter via the front door and sign-in at the front office. Visitors need to be prepared to present a government-issued photo ID which will be scanned against the National Sex Offender Registry. All visitors will be issued a visitor badge/tag to be worn inside the building at all times.

We ask that all visitors schedule an appointment to meet with teachers, counselors, administrators and all other staff members so that we may best serve everyone. Visitors other than parents/guardians must be prearranged and organized through the main office.
*ZCS thanks all volunteers for the generous support of our youth and schools. Thank you, too, for supporting the assurance of student and staff safety by completing and paying for a volunteer background check.
Did You Know?
ZCS, like other public schools, has a no-idling policy for vehicles on campus. The purpose of the policy is to limit vehicle emissions that might be brought into the schools and adversely impact the health of our students and staff. If you are stopped on campus for more than 5 minutes, please remember to turn off your engine. We thank you for abiding by this policy to help reduce the exposure to these emissions.
