Information on Parent/Teacher Conferences can be found directly below, but in short are by invite for March 8th. Watch your email!
As a building, we have spent many hours and days looking at data, which includes tracking our D's and F's, which are indicators of future performance in higher education. While we are fully aware that in education students learn from the process, multiple failing grades are certainly a red flag that means we should examine how the students are learning during the process. For help on this from the home-perspective check out this article on how to help your child succeed. Also know we as the school are in the process of looking at multiple systems, whether similar to our After School Detention to curb failing grades the same as we have decreased the number of tardies, during iConnect, or having administration/counselors meet with students. Stay tuned for updates on our MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports), including a make-over of our SAT (Student Assistance Team) process!
With both grades and new processes for RW in mind, progress reports were emailed out this past Friday based on the students having 6 weeks of the semester complete. You will see this occur at the 12 weeks point as well. While I highly recommend that you and your student both log into PowerSchool and select to receive the weekly grade report, these progress reports do allow for a quick check and conversation starter.
Finally, Spring Break is around the corner and I would be remiss if I did not remind everyone of the Pre-Arranged Absence Form available in our office for your student to take around and have teachers sign. This also makes the student's absence an excused absence.

How student's can research careers based on aptitudes?
Xello! Not Hello, but Xello. Every student can access this app via Powerschool by logging in and clicking the box with arrow in the top right corner! Our counselors are going to classrooms to explain how to use, but students can login anyplace!
Winter Parent/Teacher Conferences
On Monday, March 8th is Rolland-Warner’s Winter Parent/Teacher Conferences. These conferences are by invite only. On February 23rd invitations went out via email requesting participation in a Zoom meeting between 4:30 - 7:30 pm. Some parents may have multiple teachers requesting to discuss your child's education, so please select your time on the teacher's Sign-Up Genius Link that was sent out in the email and then use the Zoom link that was also sent in the email to Zoom with the teacher at your selected time. We ask that you log into the Zoom 5 minutes early and join the waiting room. We strongly encourage those parents who do receive invites to attend during this time or if unavailable to set up a separate time to meet with the teachers as we want to work with you to help your child.
What if you had questions or were hoping to meet with teachers but did not receive an invite? I encourage you to contact teachers via email to set up a phone conference to discuss your concerns. Our teachers are always available to discuss any academic concerns or other concerns you may have.
Please note that some teachers are shared amongst buildings and may have alternative times available from the 4:30-7:30 time frame.

COVID-19 Information
Student Daily Self-Screening
Should the student exhibit any of the COVID-19 symptoms while at the school they will be isolated and parents must come pick up the student and follow the procedures laid out in the LCS COVID-19 Preparedness & Response Student Procedures.
A free app is available for any Michigan Resident to self-screen at https://misymptomapp.state.mi.us/
OR
Utilize the LCS COVID-19 Parent Screening Tool below:
District Wide Procedures for Sick Students
Students are required to be picked up immediately and the office staff must fill out a form that is sent to the Superintendent's Office. You will receive a letter from the Superintendent's Office in collaboration with the Health Department detailing the next steps.
We understand the challenges that this may pose for parents, however, this is necessary to keep our students and staff safe and to mitigate the possible spread of COVID-19. Please ensure that your emergency contacts are up-to-date and carefully screen your students prior to sending to school to help us reduce the spread and lessen the chance that you will need to be called possibly leaving work to drive to pick up your child!
Our Mental and Emotional Health
You can find many resources on the Lapeer Community Mental Health page that can assist you or a loved one.
RW Happenings
Student Handbook Notes
Each month a couple areas of the student handbook will be highlighted. Don’t forget the full student handbook can be found under the “Parents & Students” tab on our website at http://rw.lapeerschools.org/
This month’s focus is on persistant disobidience:
Repeated misbehavior in complying with the rules and regulations of the school and instructional staff.
Sometimes little behaviors can add up. While being on your cellphone in class is one thing, repeatedly doing it despite warnings, redirection, and minor consequences such as detentions can lead to discipline in the form of suspensions. Please have this conversation with your child if you start noticing emails and phone calls from teachers for the same small misbehaviors.
Washington DC Trip
For 7th grade students not already signed up for the trip, we are having a Parent Meeting (1 parent and child) on April 15th @ 6pm (Event will be livestreamed) OR you can see the presentation and information on the Washington DC Trip page on the website that contains all the documents and forms. More information will be provided about the meeting.
Achatz Pie Fundraiser is due on March 1, orders tallied and cash or one check made payable to Lapeer Community Schools. The pie delivery date is March 23 from 2:30-5 pm. Please note the pies are perishable and must be picked up during that time frame so please plan accordingly if you sold pies.
PAC Meetings
Here is a list of the RW PAC meetings for the 20/21 school year that will occur close to the third Friday of the month at 9:30 am-10:30 am via Zoom, so you can mark your calendar: Mar. 19, Apr. 16, and May 21.

Enthusiasm
WHAT DOES ZEST/ ENTHUSIASM MEAN?
You approach life with excitement and energy. You energize people around you. Zest/Enthusiasm is the ability to bring life and excitement to different situations. It often leads to a higher level of involvement and engagement both for individuals and for groups. Those who demonstrate zest and enthusiasm bring an energy and level of intensity to individual and group work. These people are often identified as early leaders and innovators as a result of their outward
excitement about a task or project. Look for these people to recruit new group members and generate ideas.
People with enthusiasm and zest are happy, but this strength goes beyond happiness or pleasure. It is an activated positive energy, and associated with self-realization and autonomy. Zest is a strength that has
strong connotations with both physical and mental vitality and well-being. It can be fortified through diet, exercise, mindset, and social connection.
Social Intelligence
WHAT DOES SOCIAL INTELLIGENCE MEAN?
You are aware of other people’s thoughts and feelings. You understand why they do things. Social intelligence refers to a person’s ability to understand and manage interpersonal relationships. It is distinct from a person’s IQ or “book smarts.” It includes an individual’s ability to understand, and act on, the feelings, thoughts, and behaviors of other people. This type of intelligence can take place “in the moment” of face-to-face conversations but also appears during times of deliberate thinking. It involves emotional intelligence and self-awareness.
Examples of social intelligence include knowing when to talk or listen, what to say, and what to do. Timing is a big part of social intelligence. For example, someone who is imperceptive, may tell a funny joke – but at the wrong time, or not show enough interest when meeting someone new.
Love of Learning
WHAT DOES LOVE OF LEARNING MEAN?
You master new topics on your own or in school.
Those with a love of learning are intrinsically motivated and engaged in a topic regardless of achieving an external standard. They enjoy learning simply for the sake of learning. They don’t need a prize or a high grade as a reward. Their reward is the process of doing the work and improving.
People who love learning experience positive feelings in the process of acquiring skills, building on existing knowledge, or learning something completely new. Over time, individuals with this strength may develop deep and wide knowledge. Their knowledge enables them to make significant contributions to others’ understanding.
