6th Grade Science/Ciencias de 6º grado
Do you know why candy corn dissolves in vinegar? Do you know what candy bar brand will float in water? Do you know how to make gummy worms “dance” in water? Mrs. Mastrianni’s and Mrs. Gilbert’s 6th grade science students found out the answers to these questions after they completed a set of “candy” labs during the week of Halloween. It was a fun way to practice science skills such as measuring volume, forming hypotheses, and making careful observations.

Freedom’s 8th grade science students have been making waves! They can identify the wavelength, frequency and amplitude of different waves. They were able to test out how different waves work by creating a cup-string phone. One of the 8th grade classes got almost all the students in class to be connected together! They are also studying light waves and are enjoying working with mirrors and prisms.

6th Grade Health Curriculum Update
This year, we will be implementing lessons that can help to protect children against alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use. We will be using a highly effective substance abuse and violence prevention program called Botvin LifeSkills Training. Your child will bring home assignments about setting goals, making decisions, keeping friends, staying calm, and communicating with others.
LifeSkills Training is a program that has been proven to work in more than 35 published studies. Journals such as the Journal of the American Medical Association have reported how students who have participated in the LifeSkills Training program have demonstrated resistance to alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use. These effects have been shown to last for up to 12 years after students have participated in the program. We are pleased to have the opportunity to incorporate this program into our academic day.
Please feel free to contact the school if you would like more information about these lessons and how you can reinforce these important skills at home.
