RBES Parent Survey
Due to the pandemic, GCPS is administering a contactless version of the RBES Parent Survey this year. There will be no paper or school computer option. Instead, SchoolMessenger will deliver an email invitation to families to complete a survey for each school at which they have one or more enrolled students. The confidential survey will be available in English, Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese, and Chinese and will be accessed using the link and unique code provided in the SchoolMessenger email. The RBES Parent Survey will be available from February 8 through February 26. Your participation helps us to continuously improve our school.

Our Highlighted Figures for the week...
Family Engagement Tips:
It isn't always easy for parents and children to find time for meaningful conversation. One way is to let bedtime stories turn into bedtime chats. Kids are never too old for evening chats. When the lights are out, a child who might not want to communicate during the day may open up. And the bonds your communication builds will help your child make good choices in school and life. http://niswc.com/17bHC326428
Teach a respectful approach to questioning the teacher
Teachers are human and can make mistakes. But there is a right way and a wrong way for students to question the teacher. It's disrespectful to speak up in the middle of the class and say, "You're wrong!" and try to prove the teacher incorrect. Instead, teach your child to respectfully ask questions that promote understanding: "Did you mean…?" "Well, what if…?" "What do you think about…?" http://niswc.com/17bIC326428
Give back talk the silent treatment
It can be very irritating when a child has to have the last word in every argument, or mumbles negatively under her breath. But instead of getting angry, experts suggest that you ignore your child's last words. Back talk won't get her anywhere if you've ended the conversation, stopped listening and begun to walk away. Wait to discuss provocative situations until a time when neither of you is angry or upset. http://niswc.com/17bJC326428
Feed your child's memory with a grocery game
To succeed with schoolwork, your child must not only learn information, he must be able to recall it when he needs it. To boost his recall power, play a grocery game. After you shop, ask your child to help you put away the groceries. Once he has put away four or five items, ask him to tell you what they were. As his memory improves, gradually increase the number of items. http://niswc.com/17bKC326428
Encourage skill-building by making it fun
Your child benefits when you help her practice the school skills she's learning in fun ways. To reinforce writing skills, for example, you could have a "silent supper," where family members write notes instead of talking. You can also make practicing math facts a game by writing math problems in one column and the answers in another (in a different order) and having your child match them up. http://niswc.com/17bLC326428
Add some math to your child's TV time
Does your child love TV? Here's a way to add value to his screen time. As he watches, have your child keep track of the number of minutes of program before each commercial break, and then the number of minutes of commercials. Which is greater, program minutes or commercial minutes? Help him create a bar graph with his results. http://niswc.com/17bMC326428
Special time makes the best valentine
This Valentine's Day, show your child she is loved with a gift of quality time with you. Here's how: Cut out some paper hearts. On each one, put an amount of time (10, 15 or 30 minutes, an hour). Each heart is good for the specified amount of one-on-one time with you. Then let your child turn in a voucher any time she wants your undivided attention. And today and every day, tell your child that you love her! http://niswc.com/17bNC326428
